I have just phoned about a horse i have seen which is advertised as being wonderful, safe, bombproof etc etc. was chatting to the girl selling the horse and mentioned where i keep my current horse and she said 'oh, this horse used to be kept at your yard about a year ago'. By this point she had told me that they had had the horse for a year and she had been competing on it for the past year. So i phoned YO to ask if she remembers the horse, and it turns out it is a horse who was sold by a lady from the yard about 6 months ago and was promptly sent back because it broncs for britain. it was then sent away again to be sold because YO did not want another set of angry people turning up at the yard demanding to return it. So obviously the girl who is selling it has not had it for a year and is covering up this problem. I just dont know why people cant be honest when selling horses, it makes me so angry because people complain about buyers being timewasters, but if people actually advertised their horse turthfully they would not get people turning up expecting one thing and then finding something completely different. bending the truth on adverts could be downright dangerous because whoever buys this horse is expecting a steady needy and might get hurt! sorry, rant over!

tell me about it - I have since found out loads about my new horse that are totally contradictory to what I was told when I tried him and bought him - just assume everybody lies and you'll be nearer the mark!

It is one of the many, many reasons why I hate buying horses.

It would be much safer if it were possible for us to find horses that we know of. That way we'd know what we were buying into.

Good luck in your search for a horse. Count yourself lucky that your yard name was mentioned and allowed you to weed this one off your "go see" list.

It's funny (well funny sad, not funny 'ha ha') how when you look at horse adverts all the horses are made out to be pretty perfect, but if you look at loan adverts or try to descibe the horses in your yard there is a huge list of things that are more or less problems. It seems there are a lot of liars out there, but then again horses cost a lot of money so clearly that is why people are tempted to lie!

Yes, I found that when looking for my current horse, the amount of times I turned up to see this "amazing, well mannered, good conformation, lovely moving horse" that turns out to be a rude, bargy, ill-mannered...then you watch it being ridden!

I had a horse that had COPD that got bad in the summer months, I was completely honest about it when I sold him. He went to a lovely lady to be used as a light hack and companion for her other pony. I was so pleased as I knew that he got the retirement home he deserved.

I hope that you do manage to find your horse soon, I bet you will find one when you are least expecting it! I was so sick of looking for horses, due to owners clearly lying in their adverts! I really wasnt expecting much when I went to look at my lad, then as soon as I saw him it was love! sounds corny but true! stick in there kid, the right horse will come along soon.

I'd be a tad annoyed too blondy. Hoping that when I come to buy a HHOer will have a suitable horse for sale - would much prefer to buy from someone on here - greater likelihood of dealing with an honest buyer that way.

I'd really rather know that theres a problem with the horse, cos who knows, it may not be a problem to me....all horses have quirks...if I had to sell my horse the list of quirks would be a mile long , I doubt anyone else would touch him with bargepole but he's perfect for me...its just wasting everyones time lying and fudging the truth...I knew 2 of our horses before we bought them from friends so I knew exactly what I was getting, the gelding I got from a dodgy dealer ( well, NOW I know shes dodgy, didn't then obviously!) and was not as described, fortunately it worked out ok but he had also been through several homes and returned due to his quirky behaviour .....Not looking forward to replacing him, whenever that may be, I doubt theres going to be another friend selling a horse I like!!

funny you should say that, I was hoping a HHOer might come to the rescue with the perfect ponio but no luck so far! Also I'm starting to think that my stroppy six year old mare might not be so bad after all, at least i know her quirks! all i want is a safe pair of hands to look after me and give me confidence jumping and competing, is that so hard to find?? does it exist! oh well, ill keep looking! xx

Just be glad you found out before you got on it!

At the risk of another contraversial post....

if you look at things from the sellers point of view, there are so few honest adverts that the honest ones tend to be overlooked. For instance if I was going to be brutally honest about my horse I'd say she is fantastic to ride, bombproof, but a b*tch to handle from the ground. Now really she isn't that bad at all and I hardly notice it but I do have to be quite firm with her. But I've had other liveries offer to hold her while I wash her down or whatever and they get flattened!

So.... if I said she was good to handle I'd get loads of calls, but if someone a bit novicey turned up, they'd call me a liar.
If I said she was a cow I wouldn't get any interest at all, and if some brave person did turn up they'd wonder what all the fuss was about. So three guesses what I would put in an advert?

I'm not condoning totally lying about a horse like the one in the OP, just saying that sometimes skimming over the horses bad points in the ad is the only way you don't put buyers off.

***runs for cover***

no, i do agree with you. it must be tempting to gloss over some of the smaller the bad points to get a sale. But if you are selling something as a novice ride when it blatantly isn't it's dangerous, because if a complete beginner got on they could have a really nasty accident. i certainly wouldnt advertise my horse as being a novice ride, because i would want her to go to the best home where she would have fun with someone suitable for her. i would never sleep if i thought she might hurt someone!! x

i'm selling my cob at mo, and i am been very honest about him, because i want him to go to the ideal owner, where he will not be passed on, i think if people care about their horses, they should be honest when selling them on, i have had someone come just to say, oh think i need something bigger, but is size is stated in advert, also i didn't really want to pay that much, where again price is on advert. makes me so angry

Totally agree with you blondy! At least you had a lucky escape.

I do wonder though why the seller volunteered the info about him being at your yard? Surely she would have known you'd check and find out the truth??

Very odd.

well, i think she has realised that after our conversation i would do a bit of digging because she was supposed to call me and confirm a time for me to go and see him but i have not heard from her since. feel like telling her what i think about her if she does call me back which i very much doubt!! i think she just let it out without thinking. i just feel bad for the people who will go and look at him and who will pay £4k for a rodeo horse!

Im selling my horse at the mo...purely because he was bought as a confidence giver after i had a nasty eventing accident. Hes a cobby, haffy type, i do love him to bits but i want to do jumping and dressage which he isnt capable of and i cant afford 2. Ive done as much as i can with him (plus hes a bit short for me) and im having problems because ive put that hes not a childs horse, for competent teenager/adult. He takes the micky out of children and yet i get loads of parents ringing saying they are looking for a mother/daughter share as hes pretty, the right sort of height and absoutely bombproof. He also has a problem with cantering in the school, he isnt well balanced (it took a while for him to be able to trot round corners and to get him into an outline and stop leaning on the bit) and ppl seem to ignore this until they come to see him and are surprised/even angry with me, as hes perfect up until that point!! So I can understand people wanting to gloss over things, especially in the current climate and not being able to afford their horses with mortgages going up. Ive chosen to find him a good home as hes been so wonderful to me rather than buying another and being desperate to sell him not mention the problems.
