Little Lilli's anger/ agression is escalating, I have had to move stable because she is seriously upsetting the horse next door with her constantly double barreling the door. She did have a door chain to keep her a bit further back but after it being ripped out of the wall twice it's just too unsafe as she's probably been kicking and got a leg over it. She has raging tantrums in the turnout, standing double barreling at nothing and will fly at the next door horse if he as much looks at her! She's had vets, physio, bute and regumate, nothing alters her. Since I moved her stable to where she is not overlooked and no-one needs to go there when she's in I have found that people are going looking at her with the aww, poor Lilli comments. This is really annoying because Lilli hates being stared at and gets enraged, I will deal with situation this today! I'm asking about reiki because there has been a horse on the yard that was so stressed he paced endlessly found his stable even though he was very lame. A reiki practitioner came to see him and the difference was amazing, he was so chilled out and standing calmly eating his tea! Has anyone any experience of reiki on horses or does it? I'm trying everything to help Lilli and so need to find out why she is so unhappy.
 
I don't know about reiki but do know some mares, maybe a few geldings as well, really find being looked at constantly extremely stressful, barn stabling is the worst but even separate boxes can be an issue if there are horses in close proximity.
One of mine was always a little off in my barn, nothing major but moving her to my back yard where she had more privacy showed just how unsettled she was before, friends of mine have been dealing with a mare that stopped eating almost completely after moving yards with her family herd of mum, dad, sister that she has lived with all her life but this lovely yard with indoor boxes and bars between them totally unsettled her, she is now in the end box with the bars covered between her and her neighbour and far more happy, they can be extremely sensitive and your mare sounds as if she needs to be left in peace, a sign saying 'I am happy being alone' may make them stop feeling sorry for her when it is clear she really does want to be on her own.
 
I have experience of reiki on horses but I would certainly give it a go in your circumstances. I might also try acupuncture. Have you stripped back Lilli's diet?

Years ago when it was usual to feed molassed coarse mixes, I had a mare who had seen the vet many times, had endless tubs of Ventipulmin for her cough, been treated for colic, when the vet had to do the rectal exam over the stable door for safety, who became extremely difficult to handle. No underlying reason could be found.

Then by chance, we changed her diet and her behaviour changed within a week, she stopped coughing too.

I have 'accidentally' (as part of a normal aromatherapy massage had reiki myself which reduced swelling around the ankle which had historically been broken and never regained its original shape.
 
Yes. I'm Reiki trained and use it on myself and my animals - I would not call myself a practitioner as I do not have clients as such. It will help and, as you have some first-hand experience of another horse on the yard, it is worth a try. A word of caution however, I would only use Reiki by itself if I were certain that I had investigated every possible physical issue and were satisfied that all was well medically. The most effective use of Reiki I have experienced is to use an animal communicator to find out what is troubling an animal and then use Reiki to heal. There is something about understanding what is going on in their heads which changes your relationship and makes it easier to deal with whatever the trigger points are. I hope you find something which eases her troubles - the beauty of Reiki is that it can do no harm.
 
My friend had reiki on a troubled horse. I am unsure if the reiki practitioner was also a communicator she never said she was but she got all this information from the horse about the past owners who treated her badly. This all makes sense of the state of the horse when my friend bought her. My friend said it was like the horse breathed a sigh of relief while the reiki was happening becoming visibly relaxed and was a changed horse permanently afterwards. She only had it done because the reiki practitioner was coming to the yard for some others!
Thanks Be Positive for the post about being looked at. Mine sort of likes other horses in a very choosy and specific I Only Like You And You kind of way. Liking the idea of them but generally dislikes the reality of being around others appearing frightened of them and extremely stressed out having a total over reaction trying to escape the field if another horse even looks at her from across the field. I never thought of it being to do with just being looked at. Makes sense why she hates barns stables and is happy on new yards in the isolation stable for new arrivals.
 
No idea on the reiki but definitely a good plan to try and explain to the other people to leave her in peace.

Indoor barn stables can be great for some horses but utterly crap for others. My sensitive one has a corner box and benefits from that bit of extra privacy with just the one neighbour that she is happy with but can ignore if she doesn't want any interaction. The other one is a social butterfly and likes the views and contacts with others.

Last yard had 3 stables each side of a very narrow corridor indoors in one barn and it was like the horses were living in a goldfish bowl, quite oppressive. some got really stressed with the lack of private space - I don't think it's that uncommon tbh.

Hope you can help her feel more at ease.
 
Thanks a!l, very useful information! Lilli is a Shetland x Cob and is 38 inches high. She might be little but a boot from her can hurt, she doesn't nip, she bites, a crocodile snap from her is painful! She's on Luci nuts, benevit and joint powder! I've had her since 4 weeks old she's now ten so there is no hidden history but she gets worse as she gets older!
 
Luci nuts, as in alfalfa/lucerne?

Alfalfa is well known for sending some horses loopy. Strip out all the hard feed /additives and see if that alters her behaviour. If she improves, start adding stuff back in, one item at a time, and you may find your culprit.

Re Reiki, I have no experience of that.
 
Luci nuts are Lucerne only, it it's certainly worth a try though! I've found a communicator who does reiki as well, will be setting up a visit asap! I have used her in the past for my dog and went to a meeting locally, she was amazing!
 
A reiki practitioner used to come to our yard quite regularly and worked with different horses for various reasons. Out of interest more than anything, I asked her to do a session on my mini Shetland and was astonished by how relaxed he was during the treatment - he was almost falling asleep. This is not how he would normally be in the stable. I would say give it a go, you have nothing to lose.

Lucerne is alfalfa which could definitely cause problems, not sure why they use lucerne when alfalfa is the more commonly used name, clever marketing ploy aimed at sounding very friendly, somehow 'Alfie nuts ' doesn't really have the right tone for a feed.
Lucie nuts are fairly high energy, 12% sugar starch so could be too much for a shetland x unless in fairly hard work, I would give her something as low energy as possible if you need a carrier for supplements and cut out the alfalfa completely as it could be causing the problems you are seeing..

Lucerne is Alfalfa. I would take her off those straight away.
