Animals v Humans

Wow.

When it comes to 'having a healthy horse pts' the people arguing that it is not on never really seem to have a genuinely healthy horse in mind. Its always 'oh well sure it can't be relied upon to be led without kicking your head in' or 'well its too lame to do much but could still hack...' these are not truly healthy horses and as so recently demonstrated you do not know the full stories.

Immy, its great that you have such ideals, but as you say we don't live at one with nature and and I find it odd that you can be okay eating mass produced meat but not with horses being pts. You are right that we rarely see ill or injured animals in the wild; thats because they crawl into hiding to die slowly or are predated and eaten. As a horse lover I would rather mine died from a bullet than the prolonged or traumatic death in the wild.

Re income protection; it is sensible to try to futureproof yourself, but nobody should be naieve enough to believe that anything in life is guaranteed.

Yes, just came back to add that I don't think having an Income Protection insurance is a bad thing at all, I just meant you can't be sure that it will protect you from everything and mean you can live a life of luxury.. Its certainly better than not having it.

My boy is 19 now and has been retired for 3 years due to leg issues, both the vet and myself agree that as long as i can keep him pain free and happy he will carry on, if it gets to a stage where hes on 2+ bute a day and its not working then he will be PTS. I am luck enough i can carry on paying for him and our other pony, but if it came down to him vs my children eating then no matter how much i love him, i would have him PTS.

Not read replies but I would rather see a healthy horse PTS than sold to a bin end dealer or some numpty who doesn't have a clue.

A horse or any animal doesn't know when it's going to be PTS and there are many fates worse than death.. My uncle is riddled with cancer and every day is agony for him I wish he could be PTS as you would be locked up if you let an animal suffer as he is

I don't see any difference between animals and people and I'm sure even if it was legal in UK to have humans PTS people wouldn't?

I assume you are referring to a healthy person? If terminally ill, then I strongly believe we should be allowed to end a persons life.

I agree with you though on the rest - there's someone up the road from us who decided she'd had enough of looking after her elderly horses so she had them shot (even though both were perfectly sound, illness free and happy from what I heard). I do believe sometimes people wait too long to put a suffering animal to sleep though because its so hard. Its difficult to know when the right time is.

This^^^^^^. And please stop making comparisons between having a pet or working animal PTS for whatever reason and euthanizing children/people. There are people on this forum who have lost children or have had to make that horrific decision to turn off life support for a loved-one . . . these comparisons are just completely unnecessary, childish and incredibly unfeeling and callous.

OP, were you bored and decided to poo stir again?

P

I have obviously missed some of the posts you are talking about and I certainly didn't want to be unfeeling and callous. Perhaps you think I've never lost a loved one - well you'd be wrong! I lost my mum and it wasn't pleasant seeing her suffer in her last few weeks. Yes I would have liked to end her suffering if possible although I think you have missed the point. I'm not talking about 'healthy' humans or animals and no it wasn't poo stirring as you suggest. Not quite sure what you mean by poo stirring again?

Apologies if I have upset anyone going through a bad time, I can assure you it wasn't intentional

Yes MagicMelon I'm talking 'healthy' and I agree we have a better option for sick animals than we do humans. I certainly wouldn't stand by and let any of my animals suffer and in an ideal world I wouldn't see humans suffer.

I would not personally want to put down a healthy animal, would not sit right with me. But, life is not so black and white, so I would not want to judge others, there can be so many factors involved. There is as mentioned an awful lot worse going on in this country

If you decide to have children and horses then it's your choice. Then more forward planning is a sensible idea. Too many people live for today, we have income protection so if the unexpected does happen then nether us my horse or daughter will go without. If I'm unable to look after them physically then that's also taken care of. We have a responsibility to both for life so should think of the future not just today.

I had all these things in place too, then my husband had an affair and my life changed beyond recognition. My old pony went from being able to have an indefinite retirement to actually it was a absolute struggle financially. I struggled for 3 months and then she took matters into her own hands, got colic and had to be PTS - I've not recovered financially yet but believe me I would have her PTS over giving her away or sending her out as a companion pony, how fair would that have been at the age of 27 who was going blind but apart from that was "healthy"?

Some of the answers on this thread are totally naive and quite frankly I hope some of you never endure any kind of "set back" in your lives because I think it would be a long fall of your high horses! Have a horse PTS is so tough like one of the other posts says and I agree in 99.9999999% of cases the facts are not straightforward!
