Hi,

I was late getting my 3yo pony's booster jab this year and my vet said that they preferred not to give the booster and that ideally I needed to restart the course from scratch. They did say that if I didn't show then I could risk just giving the booster, but I do show. The vet said that many of the showing societies are getting very strict and will go back in a pony's passport over the years making sure there are no gaps. I suspect this may be a load of twaddle, but went ahead with starting the complete course because I was put on the spot so felt I had little choice.
When I later looked at the passport I realised I had only been late by 9 days!!!!

Any ideas if the vet is correct in what he said, or have I been had?

Vet was correct in a lot of the big show rules the horse must have up to date vaccinations and being a day late with the booster is too much and you will not be allowed in.
How hot they are on actually checking the passports when you arrive is another matter but plenty of people have been caught out and they do passport checks thoroughly.
Riding club championships is a prime example.

Thanks for that. I have been wondering what the societies felt was acceptable, and what their cut off would be. I realise they could ask for my passport at any show and I wouldn't want to jeapardise his showing (and his health) so am happy to stay within the rules, its just frustrating when I've been doing county shows etc for the past 3 years with him and no-one has ever asked to see his passport, even when stabling overnight etc,.so I had no idea what was acceptable and what wasn't - 9 days just seemed a bit tight, but I understand they have to have a cut off to stick to.

Isn't it just! However, you just never know when they are going to look. I know someone who had to show their passport at a competition and the horse had received a jab a few days late several years ago (had several boosters since) - even after all that time they had to start a new course in order to be 'competition legal' from then on.

Oh, and yes it's the FEI that requires 6 monthly flu jabs.
 
No he's right, you have to re-start the process again, a vet wont take the risk or bend the rules even if its just a few days out...well not if their worth their salt that is.

Just more expense for you I'm afraid, I'm guilty of it too, in fact I've done it twice now, been a week out, too forgetful at times.
 
My friend was turned away from a ODE after showing a passport with jabs just one day late - the vet had warned her but she didn't believe him. I've asked my vet to delay mine by 2 days before due to them falling over a weekend but he refused, so mine seem to be getting earlier and earlier each year!!
 
As others have said, your vet was right. Mine was out doing my boosters two weeks ago and we were speaking about it- he said a vet was recently struck off for altering the vaccination dates to allow someone to compete when she was only over by a couple of days.

They won't risk it.
