There should have been a frangible pin at the fence she was killed at. According to US websites, it was a gate. They had F-Ps at Badminton at the Gate fences.
I also think its not beyond the realms of fence design to put a collapsable part into ANY cross country fence. If it only takes 5cms to prevent these types of falls then it cant be that difficult.
Having said that, do they use pins abroad? When I went to the Europeans, there were a shocking lack of F-P's on the course.
My heart goes out to the girls family.
what absolutely terrible news. saw her and a wonderful horse do badminton one year. altho i never met her i think she was the same year as me in young riders eventing or maybe a little younger. how absolutely tragic. thoughts to all her connections.
Just read that she was meant to be basing herself at Plain Dealing Farm soon, (where Kim Severson has been for many many years.) Makes it all the more tragic somehow.
There has been a lot of debate about F-Ps. The reason why they can only be put on 'uprights' such as post and rails, rather than tables or very big tree trunks, is that they won't hold their weight and will collapse.
please please please dont anyone take this the wrong way, but perhaps it would be better if a new post was started concerning comments about f pins.
its just that I feel it may be better that a discussion about them takes place outside of a post like this. I understand people want to talk about it but I just feel that with respect to Eleanor it may be better to talk about it in a new post.
I really hope nobdy minds me saying this and you r more than welcome to just ignore me if you think it is silly for me to say this.
i am very sad about this news, like everyone is, i am shedding some tears now, this is a young rider who achieved so much and i will never forget seeing the way her and her horse pinged around badminton, making it look like 2ft-which everyone knows it is not. i hope she will be long remembered for achieving great things at such a young age. RIP.
edited to correct a spelling (1 of many im sure! apologies for my bad spelling)
I totally agree Boss, and also the fences today are so beautifully placed and made that they seem easier and nicer, if you look at some of the courses just 20 years ago the fences ofetn looked quite terrifying even though they were often much less techinical.
From another forum 'I just thought I would write in and clarify what happened today so there is not too much speculation. I was present for the fall at the horse park today. It was a misjudgement in striding at the second to last jump on the CCI**. The horse was fine and jumping well before the accident. With the distace to the jump that they found, he wasn't able to get his legs out of the way. Obviously, it is an incredibly sad day for everyone. I know I speak for everyone here at the event when I say all of our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.
How tragic! my heart goes out to everyone connected to her and the horse!
MDM, have to say (although not an eventer) i do agree. For the horses to be working at a higher level in the dressage esp. if 4's are introduced the muscle is different. Just look at the difference in a horse competing internationally eventing to those dressage. They are not built the same. I do wonder whether the need for different muscle tone to enable the horse to perform these movements mean the jumping phases are a little tougher for the horse?!
RIP Ellie, I can't believe this has happened. I only met her a few times, but she was a really bubbly lively person. At least she died doing what she loved.
