Another good reason for wearing a helmet

When it is cold some may be tempted to leave the helmet at home and wear a nice snuggly hat instead... well... please don't.

This girl had a lucky escape when her horse fell on top of her... both were fine though she ended up with a concussion. According to the article the horse was scared & chased by dogs at the time :-( One of her friends was taking photos just as they fell. The horse landed on her head, so she would probably have died had it not been for her hard hat.

my god, lucky girl!

ive seen this atm. there are two girls that ride past the house and yesterday and today were wearing those ''dappy'' hats instead of a helmet and a woman who never wears a hat anyway, which surprises me as her horse is young and really really spooky.

especially since they are riding downhill on completely frosted over tarmac, i went out there earlier and nearly skidded over myself.
 
I'm sorry but if that photo alone doesn't make those idiots who ride without hats sit back and take stock then there really isn't any point them wearing hats anyway cos they obviously only have jelly in their heads!!

That's shocking thank goodness both were okay.

Out of interest, why do people not wear hats? Is it a fashion thing?

A lady near our stables hacks out in a bikini and no hat in summer! And down main busy roads!

I always ride in a hat and on my horse always wear a body protector too. Always jumping any horse I wear my body protector. I just can't understand the logic of not wearing a hat unless of course you are competing western and wear a stetson, but even they allow hard hats to be worn if you so wish.
 
hehe. perhaps the bikini lady deliberately rides down the busy road for attention ;-)

According to another paper I saw today, the 18 year old girl in the photo said she wasn't planning on wearing a helmet since she was only going on a slow hack.... but that her two mates at the stables had talked her into wearing one. I am glad she had friends who cared about her so much that they said something :-)

I don't get the no-helmet users either. Even if it is cold it is fine to have a helmet, you just need good coverage of your neck & ear warmers that fit below the helmet. For really cold days I actually have a very very thin wool hat that fits under my helmet, it is perfect.

I have even had a thick fleece hat or hood on top of my helmet, but that was in -25. I prefer to avoid it since I don't hear as well with all that on, and hoods can hinder visibility a bit to the sides :-)
 
That is a fantastic pic - thank you for sharing it!! Will pass it onto the air ambulance crew who are always wanting better examples of the impacts a person falling from a horse may be subject to :)

Well, not quite!
I have a bikini top undera strappy top and 'boardies' with no hat aka my avatar. But only on the beach (we go in swimming, not galloping) but i wouldnt dream of going on the roads on a hack like it!!
 
well you only get 1 head, 1 brain and 1 neck. but if you are happy to live in a semi paralyed state with the brain of a vegetable, and have people who will care for you carry on. a bikini top at this time of year might be a little chilly. and the people that ride without hats generally dont have a brain anyway.
