I have posted a few times about feeding raw to my rotties ( not truly following BARF ) and I now have another question - sorry!

I understand that cereal and raw meat should not be fed together due to the digestion rate, and that the slow digestion of the cereal holds the meat in the system longer than it should be and can lead to problems.

My question is is this the same with fish? For example cooked white fish and mackerel/sardines from tins.

I can't get my dogs to eat any form of veg and I have found a biscuit which is supposed to be very a very natural herbage source. I know cereal for dogs isn't necessary but I have a few reasons for wanting to feed it and they won't eat it on it's own.

If I can't feed it with their meat do you think they can digest it ok with their fish twice a week?

Thank you

Small quantities of cooked fish with the cereal should not be a problem. Have you tried mixing fresh liquidised veg with a couple of raw eggs? it works with mine.

It is really odd, I would have sworn that my greyhounds wouldnt eat raw veg - until I went out to the paddock last night to get Bob in, whereupon Flick stole the carrot I took out for him :D

Yes I've tried liquidising the veg KarynK and mixing it with all sorts of things - not a hope in hell of getting them to eat it. Mind you as CareyR says they will eat a carrot destined for the horses but only if it's chopped up & in the horse feed bowl. It obviously tastes better when it's been pinched!

I am glad you say the cooked fish & mixer should be ok, I've been doing this in small quantities twice a week but just wanted to check it's not doing anything terrible to them.

Jumping in here, we have started feeding raw meet, how often should we be feeding veggies as well, at the moment they still get complete food a couple of times a week often mixed with leftover veg. They also enjoy chewing the outer leaves of coliflowers raw is this ok? we need to get a new freezer before we can go full raw!

Some raw feeders do not feed veg at all so it's really a personal thing, dogs certainly have no requirement for complex carbs but being scavengers they will certainly in the wild eat fruit and veg type plants in times of need so I tend to give mine some, if I don't they start on horse poo so I guess they do want it in their diet!!

I only feed it once or twice a week with their soft meals. I general liquidise it with eggs. Dogs cannot break down plant cell walls like us and herbivores so they need a little help, blitzing in in a liquidiser or steaming it lightly opens up the cells for the dogs to get something from it.

They are fine eating whole bits of fruit and veg but can't get a lot from it in that form. I usually use a bit of spinach type green leaf and some carrot and salad bits from the fridge as well and I feed 2-3 tablespoons full in a meal but you can add more.

The most important bit when you go raw is the bones as they are what is lacking in most diets and contain many important vitamins and minerals and are a dogs natural fibre, so once you get the freezer up and running you can introduce them more.

my two naughty whippys have been helping themselves to my carrot crop(i was blaming the kids)..i wondered why i kept seeing carrot tops in their beds hidden in the corners lol

my two will eat anything be honest..they love bananas,or anything that drops onto the floor while cooking!!

Yep if I forget the greenest cowpat like one is what they fight over and I know Sis's Huskies like their veg too so some do need it. But at the end of the day it's their choice and it might be that Rotties just don't want plants!!!!
