Has anyone given their horse a short course of Gastrogard without scoping first, under vets advice, then scoped to check at the end of the course with a successful outcome?

Horse has started on it but it is probably not going to be able to be considered a separate condition, it is most likely the result of being treated for an injury, which has maxed out the insurance , vets want to continue at 1/4 dose after 1 week on full dose, without scoping how will we know when to stop, he is still on box rest, walking out to start soon but weeks possibly a month or two away from proper turnout or work.

Any ideas or experiences welcome as my head is struggling as to which way to go, not much confidence in the vets at the moment so needing as much info as possible before the next step.

Yes but probably not much help to you. Did 11 days gastrogard, then stopped it and she was scoped a week later. Scope showed she had no ulcers, but don't know if she had them before the gastrogard as she didn't improve on it, actually got worse which was the reason she was scoped.

Is your horse drinking better now?

Thats the thing you will have no real answer if they scope clear, were your symptoms improved by treating?

He has started drinking better since being on Gastrogard, coincidence or proof of it working:confused: also a little brighter generally no more signs of cribbing either, thank goodness.

Just to add he still will not drink plain water and has changed from sloppy grass nuts back to sugar beet as his drink of preference.

I can strongly recommend Gastro Plus that deals with the entire gastric system and gets rid of ulcers as well as chrones disease, colitis and IBS. GG seems to mask the problem and as soon as you stop using this, the ulcers come back. Its so expensive, only deals with the front part of the stomach and not the hind gut or outside the stomach to the colon. I wouldnt scope as it cant see the hind gut or beyond so waste of time. I hope this helps.

That helps, even more options:eek: but the more I find out the more help it is when talking to the vets, thanks will look into Gastro Plus.

My vet recommended the G.Plus to me and with one course lasting 4 weeks at a fraction of the price of GG, we have never looked back. :)

Thats interesting that the vet recommended it, I will contact Equine Science in the morning for a chat, it is certainly worth looking at, thanks.

Interested in this, we bought a new mare xmas eve. she was very underweight and unhappy. We have given her daytime turnout and tucked in at night. Ad lib haylage and small feeds twice a day, straw bed.
She bites badly when girthed up, she is pretty much just being walked round the block still (not due to her but illness and snow)
We noticed today that she has started eating the wood around her stable and on her door.
She has put on a fair bit of weight but still a bit ribby (she is a lightweight cob type)
Dont know wether she may have ulcers ? she was eing fed a massive amount where she was before but never put on weight. Am I worrying too much or should I discuss with the vet ?

It is certainly worth having a chat to your vet, it could be several things but something sounds amiss and worth looking into.
