Our two jack russells are like this. They are full sisters from the same litter and neither is dominant. When we are not there (just watching them from a distance) they get on like a house on fire, hunt rats together, go out and come in together. It's them against the world. But if ever they are in close proximity and one of their human family comes close, or bends down to stroke them, all hell breaks loose and they have a full blown fight.
We've got used to it now, but we still find it very odd behaviour.
It took me ages to spot it in the herd, because of course you hardly ever see them when you're not there
But it's definitely resource guarding. I like to feel flattered that I have at least some value to them
