This ought to be posted in the vet forum but Tack Room has more traffic. I’m wondering if anyone has any solutions to this current problem I have…mare had a keratoma removed end of January. No hoof wall removed as it was accessed through the sole. Mare has a shoe and metal plate since January which held dressings in place and kept the regenerating sole clean. A month ago we stopped dressing and she only had plate on all was great until last week when the regenerating tissue “ ballooned” instead of being flat so vet trimmed excess away. Farrier came and trimmed as the growth of hoof was phenomenal.

The problem is, we think, the foot is hot and sweaty with not enough airflow to dry and scab up the wound site so can anyone think of a way to keep the foot clean/protect the wound but allow airflow. The next step is shoe with a leather pad but we still think that will be sweaty. One suggestion has been Ames tape …I was hoping I’d be transitioning to turn out at this point, sadly not.

Anyway if anyone has any ideas I’d gratefully receive them. 🙂

No idea, but is there some sort of removable plate option (fixed via stud holes?!) than can cover when out then be removed to allow cleaning/air/drying?

Might the old poultice trick of a dry nappy work, with vetrap or duck tape on above the sole but not covering the sole? Possibly with a poultice boot over the top to keep it dry.

Thank you for having a think..I should have said mares foot is wrapped in dry dressing, bandage then tape. Originally this protected and covered the metal plate, we ve taken this off and she’s standing without shoe or plate but with the dressing and tape. I think the tape will be keeping the heat in the foot thereby making it sweaty. Medicine/poultice boots will do the same I think. Abacus I wonder if we could make a lattice of tape to cover the sole with its dressing…if we keep her shoe less. I’d worry about fecal contamination of the wound if she steps in poo though.

are you using a nappy? They are designed to wick moisture away and hold in in the nappy. I found they worked a lot better than cotton wool.

If it helps, I had a pony many years ago with a similar hole. This was in the days before hoof boots and she managed to remove her dressings on almost a daily basis. I obviously cleaned it thoroughly each time, but the stress was enormous. She made a full recovery, despite her hole being full of dung more than it wasn't!

Thanks Meleeka for some reassurance…we actually alternate between nappies and dressings depending on what is to hand. Blummin vet actually used cotton wool after r3moving excess tissue and it stuck to wound duh.
