Any idea on the going price for a young(ish) horse schooling ele

I would say it depends hugely on a number of things:
- Breeding?
- Height?
- Potential (are we taking a horse that is never going to go above medium)?
- What you mean by youngish (5 vs 8!)?
- Is it an amateur or pro ride?
- Does it hack?
- Easy to do?

When i was looking for something competing elementaryand schooling med/adv med i saw everything from £5k to £25k!!!

Thanks :)

Just looking for an "ordinary" horse - no flashy warmbloods ;)

Average size, approx 16.2, about 5-6 years, potential to go further (Advanced/PSG, though probably not GP lol), amateur ride, will also hack, and small jumps too.

Easy to do, no vices, not a diva.

There's quite a jump between elem and medium in terms of prices. Like Dressage_Diva said, there's a lot of variety in there.

I've seen an ISH (though it was part WB) as you've described go for 25k, and it wasn't flashy. That is unfortunately the most popular height/age etc, and ammy-safe adds a premium. You will probably get a bit more for your money with a non-wb, although I have to say WB paces will make life easier! You might be best going for something with a super temperament and a good record at Novice and paying for some pro schooling to push it up to elem/medium.

I would expect most late in the year 5YOs and certainly 6YOs to be schooling at Ele level really, so the search need not be for 'dressage' marketed horses that tend to have a bit of a premium...

Have bought for a friend relatively recently- 12k for a very nice 5yr old, not flashy but very correct and unspoilt. 6.5k for a 7yr old perhaps a little greener in his work but a lovely smart ISH and safe as houses to hack etc

Thanks all. It's interesting to see that there is a wide range it makes you wonder how you decide upon a budget.

Rara, it's interesting you say that. If it were the case, why is it that people are pottering around doing Intro/Prelims for years? A lot of people I talk to online think leg yielding and shoulder in are "advanced" movements beyond their ability.

I haven't ridden any horses other than my own for a long time, but when I went on holiday in May and went hacking, the horse has absolutely no concept of stepping away from the leg. All I could do was lead it around by the nose. It was a very disconcerting experience.

Even if you're not considering a flashy WB I think you'll be looking at £15k+ if you're seriously looking for something to go PSG that is also an amateur's ride and hacks and jumps. I'd consider looking at eventers who have perhaps been found to not have the scope/enjoyment for XC but has good paces (benefit is they will also hack and jump small fences).

If you're willing to compromise on age, then you can get the price down. In 2015 I bought an 8yr old green WB who had done 2 elementary classes and knew travers, baby halfpass and changes for £12.5k and he is an amateurs ride. He is quite flashy, with good breeding and should go PSG. I don't jump him but i think he would (he has the canter for it!) and he does hack in company but not alone.

Depressing, isn't it... I'm often surprised when i ride other peoples horses, how little education they've really had.
but I agree with Rara,I would expect any horse produced by a pro or a serious amateur would be able to LY (and SI) proficiently by age 5/6.. and it's really not a great leap to do travers, walk piris and HP from there if it hasn't already done so.

I consider my cob to be 6yo in terms of her development, as she has basically 2 years of training under her belt (despite being 11yo! spent a lot of time in early retirement after she was backed ;))
She is competing ele and schooling all the Medium towards AM stuff.

Thanks everyone :)

I'm actually not looking for a new horse, but I'm selling my youngster - here in France (so this is *not* an ad for him ;).

He is 5 and is currently schooling probably around medium (will go true or counter canter in a straight line, will do simple changes, lateral work in walk and trot, renvers, travers, baby halfpass etc; walk pirouettes are his "circus trick" and he does them for fun etc). His paces are straight and correct, but not flashy, and he doesn't have the shoulder to do a *wow* extension, but he does have a correct baby extension. He will have a fab passage/piaffe in time - his "showing off / naughty" passage is already good and correct.

He's not a novice ride (due to age), but certainly not a pro-only ride either. He'll hack by himself or with others, isn't particularly strong, not scared of anything traffic wise. He'd probably be great XC, but he's too heavy to be agile SJing. At the moment he hasn't don't much jumping due to his age, though I'd imagine he'd be up to scrambling around 90cm/1m with training.

He's a poppet to look after, no vices, will stand in his box with the door open while I faff getting tack ready, absolutely not a diva.

I was just surprised when my instructor said that I should ask at least 7.5k for him

It's just a damn shame I can't ride him, he's too wide for my hip (blummin injuries are starting to creep up on me!), and his normal trot is too big for me to be comfortable.
