Any ideas?- Lazy horse coming down from field!

Pickle is lovely in most ways but one thing that really bugs me is the way he takes agess to lead in from the field, and he just stops and you end up having to nearly drag him!! Bridles make no difference, giving him a slap with the leadrope makes no difference! It is down a hill but every other horse manages to walk faster than him!!

Any ideas, is slightly annoying when person who caught horse from same field is on yard tacked up by time I get Pickle down!

so do I! but I can't do anything to get him moving, he even did it when he had 6 weeks off though and only ever came down to be groomed! If he was smaller I'd jump on him and ride him down, but there is no easy way to get on a 17.1hh!

Can you take a schooling whip in when you bring him down? We used to have one like that on our yard, and a few little reminders soon had her striding out

Easier than trying to flick the leadrope.
 
Is he slower than other horses walking down hills in general (riding or in hand) or is it just when you are bringing him in on that particular hill?
Fella finds going downhill difficult full stop because of the size and subsequent weight of him, he either walks down it incredibly slowly or tries to bomb down it.
 
Well he is slower than sisters TB walking down when ridden but nowhere near as slow as when walking down from field, and he just stops dead and stares at me like a toddler having a strop!!
 
D comes in at a snails pace. The only thing I've found works is to flick her bottom with a lunge whip while keeping walking. Lunge whip works better than a schooling whip because you can get her so far back. TBH I don't usually bother though, I've kind of given in and accepted it.
 
Darcy does this on a flat field, and he's a TB X ID . It is highly annoying!! He'll stand there and every part of him will lean towards the rope -besides his feet

Lol Jess he sounds like my Mcfly as he plants himself either in the field or on the way out of the field. He has done it with me and people who share him too.
His sharer has found though that his natural halter which I have been using on him again has had a better effect on him coming in. Maybe its because it works on pressure points across his nose etc and as such he finds it harder to resist being led than in his ordinary headcollar.
Do you use one of these Jess or can you borrow/buy one to see if it makes any difference?
 
a few days of making him walk nicely with aid of schooling whip should work. start on flat ground and teach him to lead purposely .. you could trot as well like when hunters are stripped out. then take schooling whip with you and make him march in from field. dont want to be dragging him when its dark and winter
 
Think tommorow may go aimed with the bitless bridle and schooling whip! if he really won't go will borrow small kid
