I'm looking for ways to get white socks clean without bathing for Pony club, I useually just use talc and chalk, but just doesn't cover the stains that have accumulated all winter. I don't mind rinsing when i get home, but no time to bath and dry before going on a saturday morning! I'm looking for ideas on a budget!

Google shows lots of people using baby powder / cornstarch with zinc oxide mixed to a paste and rubbed onto damp socks and then bandaged over, then brushed out when dry, has anyone tried this, does it work?
I looked for some to buy on internet and it seems quite expensive, so thought about buying cornstarch or talc and mixing my own with zinc oxide from ebay, anyone tried this?

Zinc oxide is usually available in a paste already (Desitin baby cream for instance), couldn't you just add corstarch or talc to that? I have no idea if it would work though. I've used the cream & baby powder to prevent scratches in muddy conditions, but not to clean white socks. Couldn't you just hose and shampoo her socks instead of giving her a full bath?

If pony/horse is stables we put 'mud' boots on overnight That is from 11pm to about 6am. they keep the worst off, then if there is a smudge we use a flannel and soapy water. This way you an just get the dirty bits wet, then dry with stable towel!

Supreme Products do a spray that works quite well but nothing is better than washing. Could you not wash them Friday night and then use the whitener on Sat am. That way they should be sparkling.

As the owner of two greys, one of them a total mud monster, I find the concept of not having enough time to wash socks quite offensive :D

Pig oil and sulphur a week before going anywhere, then white hairspray like you get from a joke shop! The White paste works well on clean just washed legs, but quickly goes manky if done on dirty legs!

Chalk and lots of it!

Sorry for offending those with greys! He lives out and I work till 5 on Fridays, so by the time I get home its dark and we've got no lights and hot water where the pony is! I'll just have to get up earlier for the daughters tack and turnout marks, or she will! thanks for all the replies

Tbh, getting up half an hour earlier and washing them will save you money on any fancy products - just take a thermos of hot water and towels to the yard with you.

I have a blue and white cob that I hunt weekly so feel your pain….and wish it was only white socks I had to worry about!

OMG...the feathers! How the hell do you guys deal with all the feathers?? I trim my mare's legs in the winter to keep her from trapping mud and getting infections, and all she has is a winter coat with hairy legs. I can't imagine trying to deal with mud and real feathers like that.

After work:
Head torch
rubber gloves
shampoo
hot water in flasks and in milk 4 pint plastic bottles (former from kettle and latter from tap)

Wash and rinse legs then add paste overnight, brush off in morning, spot wash anywhere else.
Keep 1 container back to do final rinse to warm legs through.
Have had to do this a few times, i have no power/hot water at yard.

have fun :)
