Any ideas what this is?

When I brought horse home from retirement livery 12 months ago he had this small bald patch, it’s about the size of a 50p piece. I thought it might be a touch of rain scald or just where he’d lost a tuft of hair being bitten by another horse but it’s never gone away!

It’s scurfy but never gets sore or scabby. It’s right on the top of his rump so not somewhere he can rub or reach to itch it.

I’ve tried various creams, medicated washes, leaving it alone altogether. Nothing seems to work. No seams on his rug that could be rubbing there. He only has this one patch and it’s never spread or popped up anywhere else and his coat is otherwise healthy.

Any ideas??

My mum's horse has a patch like this. Ditto creams from the vet and washes and antiseptics and it never ever changes or gets bigger or goes away 🤷 doesn't seem to bother him at all though just looks odd - and it's been there years regardless of rugging or not - always been exceptionally frustrated not to know what it is. It's just a bare, quite hard roundish patch of dark skin.

Thank you, I’d never even heard of this!
No worries 🙂

And don't stress about it if it is!
I know sarcoid is a horrifying word to some people, but my lad has 2 occult sarcoids and they've never bothered him at all. One has stayed exactly the same in the 4 years I've had him and the other has shrunk from about an inch and a half across to about the size of a pea.
I just leave them be and try not to bother them.

Thank you! He’s 30 so I’m not too concerned about stuff like that, I’m sure his days are limited bless him so as long as he’s comfortable and it’s not bothering him I’ll stop worrying. I was more concerned it was some sort of skin condition that wasn’t clearing up but it hasn’t changed at all in 12 months.
