Any Ideas?

My mare has been out of sorts for a while now (about a year!) and has had various saddle problems but those are fixed now and she's still not right. She's developed more ailments as time has gone on.
She's still uncomfortable being ridden (esp when trying to get her to work correctly where she head tosses) even though I'm riding bareback (should there be any saddle issues, such as pain memory). She's a bit more (used to poop a couple of times when I'd been riding, this has more than doubled) there a wee bit more sloppy, but not much. She's also very grumpy and has gone through phases where she wont catch. Also, she wont let you touch her belly with out kicking out, also very uncomfortable for her to have her roller girthed up. (Her belly has also been making some crazy noises)
I'm thinking that there is some sort of gut problem, maybe ulcers or something not as severe. She's been on pink powder for about a week and it's helped her bloating a bit, but nit much.

The vet is coming on Monday as it's just not something that's going to "pass" I don't think, plus she's getting more and more uncomfy, I just wondered if you wonderful, knowledgeable people of HHO had any ideas what might be up?

Thanks, Emma x

Yeah - I make it sound like I have ignored it for a whole year!

I haven't really! The vet came to see her as she had weird symptoms such as wee-ing excessively under saddle, so she had ovary scans as there were no infections but it turned out she had back trouble (because her saddle didn't fit - and the headplate was cracked) and that was seen too first but I think now that that has been seen to this has come to light.

Hi MG. A puzzler. If you suspect ulcers and gut probs in general it might be worth starting her on Coligone which is made specifically for stressy neds and those with ulcers. H's Mum - who signs as Coligone Kate! - can tell you all you need to know. Vets prescribe it. Is the pretty palomino in your avatar the mare in question? If so, she certainly doesn't look the typical stressy TB but Coligone can't harm her even if it doesn't help. One thing I think maybe I'd do is try not working her for a while. Just bring her in to fuss and groom and love so she forgets about work for a while. If she settles and loses her grumpiness then you'll at least know it's work related. If she's the same work or no work then it's NOT work related. Not much help but at least maybe a clue for the direction to look in? Is she just as uncomfortable long reined or lunged, ie without any rider? Just wondering coz even though bareback eliminates any possibility of saddle problems, it does put the rider's weight squarely down on the horse's back with no protection for the spine. Poor you and poor mare - must have been a worrying (and expensive) year. Hope you have some success soon x

It's certainly a tricky one. She is telling you in the best way she can that there is a problem.
This may sound far fetched but have you tried a Rekki (sp) healer?
I thought it was all nonsense but a friend had her horse "talked to" and it was quite amazing what she found out.

In a case like this then I think even the far fetched is worth trying.
Good luck and keep us informed.

We have had a spiritual healer to her the other weekend, she said that there were "lumps" in her stomach, like undigested food, not "bad" lumps.

The vet was out today, her gut (maddies, not the vet

) is incredibly over active and I have to take her off of the haylegde and onto poor/soaked hay. If this doesn't work then I have 10 days of painkillers to try her on.

If both of these fail, we'll test her for allergy/intolerances then go down the ulcer route

Hopefully one method will help!
