I'd completely forgotten the misery I had a couple if years ago, tonight it all came rushing back as I carried a couple of armfuls if hay, from the bale to the box, wearing only a t-shirt. Within 30 minutes I had an allergic rash from wrists to shoulders which is itching like mad despite copious amounts of antihistamine gel :(

Summer is going to be so fun... Not

Hi Casey76,

I feel your pain as I suffer to! I come out in a rash and have to wear a face mask as I struggle to breathe & can feel my throat getting tighter when I'm near the stuff!

I wish my boy ate haylage 😢

Yes, I do although it is much worse in summer. If hay touches my skin I come up on red wlts though fortunately my hands are OK. Soe years ago I ended up with Farmers Lung as a result of the type of hay I was using.

Yes I also suffer with straw and haylage funnily enough in summer I'm fine other than rapeseed but winter definatly outweighs summer in the allergy department. I can remember one day having to drive to the drs luckily just down the road as my eyes had swelled to slits I was sneezing and my throat was so tight I thought I was starting to choke no lie the Dr almost keeled over when he seen me big emergency dose of antihistamines and a stern warning to ensure I took them before I attended the farm again. Whoops

Eggs,

What is farmers lung?

Don't know what the medical description is but my boss reckoned I sounded like I had TB (in fact I was tested for that by the doc) as I rattled when I breathed. Unfortunately I ended up giving that load of hay away and getting some different hay which solved it.

Farmers lung is a hyper sensitivity to the spores in hay/straw. My mum was diagnosed with it last year hers has progressed to a chronic disorder now, she was in intensive care and had to be resuscitated twice (she's 54!!!) she had to sell all her horses and can't be around any other animals a trip to Chester zoo set off an attack earlier this year. My dad comes out in hives if he touches hay and can't breathe and me and my husband are allergic to hay too!!! My dad and I are also allergic to horses. We really shouldn't be a horsey family.

Yep her consultant told her, her lungs would have been in better nick if she had smoked 40 woodbines a day for the past 20 years I always wear a mask now as it scares the crap out of me!

Yep i know the feeling, every single day its awful! im allergic to horses, hay and bedding and yet i still have a horse:L oh why do i have them?! i get a prescription allergy tablet called certrizine hydrochloride and its 10mg, they help but the effects are still there

I've been allergic all my life since about 5 years old, but I have found as I have got older I no longer need to take antihistamines, it's as if my body has become desensitised. I still get hives, and I cough but nothing more serious than that. I have to make sure I groom and do haynets in a well-ventilated area, and I can manage with the symptoms I get.

Yes hay and straw but I feed small bale haylage we bed on bed max and I feel so much better it has made a huge difference .
I also don't do much yard work anymore and that helps too.

I get a rash the minute I forget my gloves when doing haynets :( unfortunately for me, mine is caused by a diminished immune system due to another condition. Still sucks though!! Especially when you forget gloves and have to walk all the way back to the stables lol x

You know you can buy that very thing for about 80p in supermarkets right? Just a tip as I buy about 3 boxes every time I go shopping!

I'm allergic to quite a lot of er, nature!

Yep, not particularly seriously but I've got a grass allergy that rears its head when I wander romantically through fields and hastily stuff haynets! I end up with red hives all over whatever's touched the hay, not pleasant. Sometimes I get some piriton, but usually it's only a bit annoying and not really horrible. I have a lot of sympathy for you guys who have it more seriously, allergies can be really very unpleasant!
