Anyone been kicked by their horses?

I got between mine in an argument once, took a shod cob hoof to the thigh - no damage :p I also got my hand between the highlands bickering and got teeth to my hand - sizeable lump removal (and I ended up doing TREC the next day with vetwrap round my hand :p). However, once done, twice shy - the ponies now appreciate that it is in their own best interests not to fight in my vicinity

My big girl broke my knee cap when I first got her. She wasn't very good having her feet picked out and while waving it about caught me on my knee. She wasn't trying to kick me just get me off her leg but she's a big girl and it hurt a lot.

Been kicked a handful of times by my share mare Kelly - she is a known kicker and GENERALLY she threatens but doesn't actually follow it up...my bad luck when she does! Will never learn, I still stand near her bum when a horse goes past and warn her!

Only had a few bad injuries, mainly from falls.

Took a tumble jumping when our other mare (a big 16.2hh!) overjumped, I sat the jump but couldn't keep the landing and ended up hitting my head, got some concussion.
Had a bit of a rough fall from Kelly, she got tangled up in barbed wire and I got knocked out, cracked a rib and damaged my cartilage between my ribs somehow.
Was wearing a hat both times!!

I ended up lay underneath an ISH once, but that was neither my fault or the horses - bad reaction to sedation jab. Tore some ligaments in my foot, still gives me occasional trouble but on the whole, in 14 years I've been pretty damned lucky!!

One of the miniatures at work kicked me in the lady part! Hurt like hell and had a massive bruise which everyone wanted to see:o

One of my horses tries to kick me all the time but I'm too clever for him as he gives about 5 mins warning so I move!

I got kicked by a youngster I was working with whilst picking up his hindfeet, he booted me one in the thigh and I still have the dent! I consider myself lucky though, an inch lower and that would have been my knee...

my baby kicked me last week, he's never ever tried or even looked like he'd know how to kick before, I don't recall his foot making contact with me but whatever happened, I was sent flying from the yard, through the stable door, where I hit my head and my leg on the way in! he's not shown any signs of wanting to do it again, so thinking it was hopefully a one off!

when i was younger, was leading a horse upto the school for a group lesson, my horse bite the arse of the horse in front and it kicked me in the leg about 6 times!

and about 10 yrs ago my mare trampled me when I feel off of her! shes never tried to kick me though!

had a lovely kick recently off a pony i rescued, after vets, farriers dentists and good feeding, thought i would take her for a little walk, have a nice graze, All well until it was home time, pulled away, dragging me with her, spun as i caught up and caught my inner thigh ! bruise from top to knee, lasted weeks ! so grateful arent they ?!!

Yup kicked seven weeks ago today back of left calf fractured the leg and I am still lame and swollen. Now crutches free but have to sit with the dam thing up when I can.

kicked in the face by my in season mare while hubby was leading her up ramp into lorry , broken jaw , smashed 12 teeth , sittches in face , lost two stone in a month

Yep. I had my whole face demolished after being double barreled in the face (accidentally) by my (shod) mare when trying to walk her in hand after boxrest (there's some vet advice I won't be taking again!) Broke pretty much every bone in my face. I've since had a few years of surgeries and pain management and have an illness as a result of the trauma to my body. Not recommended!

Never. Kal has his faults, but kicking isn't one of them. He's bitten me twice (both times when I was girthing him up too quickly - we take our time now) and he waves his left hind around a lot but he's never, ever kicked out at me.

He has, however, stepped on me by accident when I've fallen off . . . lovely hoof-shaped bruise on my left instep.

He may be threatened with being turned into sausage meat sometimes, but it's not because he kicks.

Sadly yes, twice, by the same mare, both times whilst leading her in hand.

Had her since she was 4 months old, she got an injury as a yearling and had to do in=hand walking after box rest, she spun, kicked and wholloped me.

Second time I was leading her into trailer and she said no, spun round, booted me again and bogged off, jumped over the fence in her travel boots and refused to be caught.

Both times huge swellings and bruising to me back, second time had to go to work in my pj's as my back was so sore and swollen I couldnt wear anything else!!

Mare will never be shod behind, will threaten in field and warn. Had handling lessons with her and 99% of time she is fine, just that 1% she will turn bad :-(

She's 9 this year and I love her despite her faults x

The only time I've been kicked was by my dartmoor mare.

She had a wound on her face, which I was applying cream to - first time, good as gold, but it must have stung. Second time - well, as I tried to approach her with said cream in hand, she whipped her bum round to me and lined me up. I daintily stepped to one side, and in a second she turned, lined me up again and double-barrelled me. She really meant it.

I must have put my hand across my stomach to protect it, because she caught my little finger, which (3 years on) still has a lump on the side of the middle joint (although thankfully now gradually going down).

I don't really blame her, and she has never done anything remotely like it again. In fact, she is my best friend and follows me everywhere like a puppy.

Several years ago I was bringing my mare in from the field and got kicked. To get out to the lane we had to walk through another field (full of juicy grass), greedy pony couldn't resist and took off as we came through the gate; I had let go but she bucked and caught me on the way past :( Thankfully I was able to phone my mum as I then had to be rushed to hospital by ambulance and spent a week in intensive care - I had 3 large lacerations to my liver, most pain I have ever been in! Spent over 2 weeks in hospital and 3 months off riding :(

:eek::eek::eek: Ouch! I was kicked in the face but not as severely! I walked around the back of a horse and kicked a stone, he spooked and kicked out and just glanced my forehead. I had 8 stitches and the doc said that a few inches either way and I'd either be blind or dead! Silly me

Yes. A loose dog was snapping at my tied up ponys legs in my teens. I went to grab it as she decided to boot it & caught my knee.
Very fear aggressive project horse, flipped if you restrained him, bit if you didn't. I decided to wear thick clothes till he realised I wouldn't hurt him. Still got a few nasty bites though, but the method did work.
Horse at work double barrelled me in the ribs. Idiot townie neighbours had got a hunting horn, I was mucking out & she got excited & exploded, nothing nasty & I cracked my ribs.
Horse I was leading slipped & crushed my foot into a wall, several broken foot bones, more if I hadn't had toe caps on.
Loads of kicks squaring up to grumpy shetlands & refusing to back down first.
Chunk out of my shin from a random pony at a show, some idiot had tied it up by its bridle to a trailer, it had its head caught & while I was getting close enough to pin its head it went up & caught my leg with a front hoof, through leather boots, breeches, & dented my shin bone.
And loads of others too.

Just wondering as been kicked by moody mare, completely my fault! You learn by your mistakes eh x)? What injuries have you had from your neddies?
Three years ago, our new pony kicked my friend, who was in her early sixties. The next day the doc informed her she had broken some bones in her hand. She's a tough old bird, and not only did she have a big payout from the personal injury insurance she'd recently taken out, but she also took me out for a slap-up meal ! Definatly an animal lover.

Yup been there and done that. I was doing a sort of co-op board and was bringing in the horses to feed one night. Brought my friends big almost 18 hand Canadian Sport Horse in...no problem. Brought my 16.1 hand Thoroughbred in...no problem. Next up...our 2 year old 15.1 hand Canadian Sport Horse in....problem....he's not the spooky kind at all and having helped back him, I trusted him so I kept a really long lead on the lead rope. Well, he spooked at something and turned around and kicked me right in the hip. Sent me down to the ground and he was running around like an idiot. Called my friend to come help me because the worst horse to bring in (a spooky almost 17 hand Appendix) was still outside and I hadn't fed dinner yet.

I was in so much pain that I wanted to throw up. Thankfully (well, as much as you can be) my friend was just given new painkillers because she had a terrible fall 4 months earlier and was still in recovery mode.

My friend drove me home and the next day, because I had no car, had to ask my moms bf to drive me to the barn. Believe it or not, the pain didn't stop me from still doing stalls....although it did hurt.

Clothes didn't fit right for a little while either. My right hip swelled up massively so my clothes were tight on the right side but loose on the left ;)
