Anyone bought a mare and found she was in foal?

I know a mare that three vets assured the owner was not in foal (they had been trying) one in the late stages. She had a lovely foal about 4 weeks later.

OP rare and I'm sure unlikely but it would do no harm to keep an eye on her teats for the next few months.
This is not filling me with hope! I go on holiday at end of October for a week too!

Highly unlikely to happen to you but vets (like all of us) are no infallible.

The mare I know was just about to be injected to bring her into season for another go at covering and lots of us do gooders on the yard had been nagging the owner to triple check ! Luckily she did otherwise the injection would have aborted the foal ! Different situation where we knew she'd been covered.

My mare had a swollen udder as well and was producing milk. That’s probably why the vet had no doubts upon seeing her. So keep an eye on that.

First pic is a few days before she foaled (we knew she was pregnant). Second is about two weeks before (we did not know she was pregnant).02BA13B8-F02F-4D06-BCEB-0056A449EE64.jpegCB919AD2-BF12-4E82-9DEF-BF2D2C165DAE.jpeg

That mare is in foal. Probably passed 8 moths and the foal is low. My vet did an internal and didn’t feel a foal but explained that passed 8 months they are often not reachable. 11 weeks later out popped a dark big colt. Vets are not infalable so wouldn’t be at all surprised when your foal appears
Oh god! I’ve put her back in with my other two but wondering whether to split them up at night! Or bring them in but I only have 12x12 stables with an open 12x12 shelter in the middle.

OP, I think you’re on board anyway, but don’t restrict diet immediately incase she is in foal which joking aside I think is quite likely. Presumably a vet could confirm with a blood test if you really want to find out?

might be worth talking to a specialist repro vet if your practise has one? A livery I was on a yard with once got BOGOF twins she wasn’t aware of/ was in denial about and sadly lost one because they were unprepared. Not wanting to frighten you, but I think it’s always good to have the info if poss.

It was the vet at my local vet hospital that specialises in reproduction!

yes its not that uncommon dealers/sellers often in my experience run a mare with a colt then if she doesnt sell they they a free faol to sell .if she sells well so be it. they dont tell you this. when viewing.

My friend was convinced her 4 yo mare she had recently bought was in foal got the vet they said definitely not, pony kept jumping out of her field all winter.

April 1st this year friend walks up to her stable to muck out, she had a black and white colt in with her she must have given birth in the early hours.

This is not filling me with hope! Although I could deal with a foal in Spring! The thought of a foal in Winter is freaking me out!
She had jumped out of the field at breeders (scars on back legs) but apparently older mares were in the field!

Well I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that I think it's fat not foal. She looks to have some fat deposits on her hindquarters and a cresty neck.

Very happy to be proved wrong though! ?

Well I did have a gelding who did a stellar pregnant mare impression if on too much grass - again very localised weight gain and a hilariously similar shape. I was always grateful that he wasn't a mare as I'd have been panicking ?

OP if it makes you feel any better I didn't think her udders looked suspicious at all, just the shape of her belly. Anyway I wouldn't do anything too drastic yet but definitely don't be feeding her up. Living out in winter should sort out the fat.

We're all obviously still hoping for a foal, sorry! ?
