Anyone else a sucker for a good name?

Work is quiet today and I'm doing some hypothetical horse shopping. I've realised I'm drawn to adverts that mention the horse's name but only if I like the name. I know it's daft (and I was looking for real I probably wouldn't be) but I can't help myself. There's a lovely Fred and a lovely Barney there, but other names have left me cold and I've not paid as much attention to their adverts and one (who would probably be perfect for me, if I was actually looking) I've totally discounted due to his awful name!

Anyone else drawn to ads by totally irrelevant/illogical things?

Yes I'm a sucker for a nice name, especially those traditional English names that sound solid, kind and dependable such as 'Arthur'.

I've just found a Gerald. I'm about to ring and put a deposit down just based on that! He sounds like a nutter but even so......

God yes! The old names from old riding school too many years ago to mention..Pirelli, Nelson, Shamus, snowball, snowflake, maxi, jock, hector, token, clondyke and the best..Pogo! And yes he did pogo!

I love Kevin, owned by an HHO member.

I have a Henry, he's Clyde too and it really suits him.

On a completely different scale I also have a Tanzanite Rizzle, which I think is a fantastic name for a very big, lightweight, strongly marked chestnut American Paint :)

My favourite names were an eventer called Oingy Boingy and last year's Australian racehorse Horsey McHorseface.

I have a Brian (Dangerous Brian) who suits his name down to the ground! I'm sure people like him more because of his name!

I very nearly bought a pony at a sale just because he was called Jonathan!!

I managed to make naming foals easier by giving each mare a theme and naming the foals accordingly.

So Indigo Ripple had Bounty, Galaxy, Snickers and Minstrel (you get the theme.)

Of course Ripple was named from her Mum's theme - Bazaars Brook, who had Reflection, Ripple, River Rising, Moon River, River Breeze, Amazon, Castara and Tralee Delta. It makes it easy to remember who the hell each one belongs to.

I won't bore you with them all, lol.

Did Snickers snicker?

Lovely names!

Some horse names I have liked: galisco, eva, nativo, viola.... Think I like the foreign sounding names! I hate when they are called things like Hugh or Berty. Also names that are colour related I don't like. I saw a gorgeous palomino for sale once but it was called Goldie 😛... I would totally have changed that to something completey different !

I love Delta and Castara, I might have to steal those one day!

Nothing like a good bit of hypothetical horse shopping, I do it most days!
Names I'm less swayed by - for me it's facial markings, I'm a sucker for a star and snip, or just a snip. Always drawn to those. Ironically I have never owned one!

lol, you'd need to find them - both in new homes and much loved - though Castara IS coming back for selling - she's a bit lively for her nervous owner! She was one of 2 exceptions at mine - both by H Tobago, the Arab stallion. That's where Castara comes from - fits the theme of water - but also fits the stallion (Castara is a seaside village on the island Tobago!) Mum being an IDxTB - but throwing much more to the TB - Castara is an Anglo-Arab with a dash of ID sense. So if you'd like a 15.3/4yo beautiful mare, just yell.

lol, Snickers is rising 4 - not backed yet - and he is SO friendly he put one buyer off because of it. He is your constant shadow in the field - you trip over him. But he's a nice boy really!

Shhhhhhhh I have been eyeing Snickers up on the FB site. He's a beauty x

I came across and Arnold the other day which I thought was adorable. My personal favourite is our wee pony Simon who's name suits him perfectly as he is just a wee Granda pony. Also know a Roy. Pony's with people names are the best imo.

I don't like human names for animals. Sorry :( Just me, I think. Except a friend's jack russell called Vernon.

I like horses' names to originate from their parentage (big thumbs up Janet George ;) )- the more laterally thought out, the better. All racehorses used to be named in this way and then it stopped, which is sad. Where I grew up we didn't do human names for horses, so I suppose my reluctance to like them has come from that.

The irony of course being that I have owned a Rosie (C'est la Rose Z), and a Larry, whom is known to us as Binky (this poor horse is called Direct Prospector on his passport. He is by Golden Lariat and I think all horses from that stud by GL got called Larry) after the horse that Death rode in on.... it's a bit of a joke in the family and of course because a lariat is a lasso which tightens like a noose..... and I have Villa Laura but she's called Jams in the stable.

My last contribution to a naming thread on FB won [smug] with Drumaí Ceilí (Drumee Caylee), resulting from a combination of Treble C and Pamona. I was also in luck with La Rondine (United x La Traviata); Royal Blue (Royal Diamond x Barracuda) and a few more.

I knew someone who liked hunting, but was also a keen sailor so his horses were all named after shipping areas. He had Bailey, Shannon, Rockall, Viking, Finnistere (before it was renamed as Fitzroy) and so on. Fortunately he didn't have to resort to North or South Utsire - much less attractive horse names in my opinion!

I don't mind human or random so long as I think it suits the horse tbh. It is for this reason I am so mad my YO named my favourite foal of hers mr cocky. WHY WOULD SHE DO THAT HE IS SO SWEET AND THE EASIEST ONE SHE OWNS! I have had an India who I named and have a Rosie who I didn't but I refer to her as fatty or fat lump or piglet which are far more suitable. My favourite name probably that I have met was an eventer called Mr Bond who's stable name is James.

Although I do also love a very evil thelwell esque Welsh sec a called Rupert. His best friend is called Humphrey and is a very reliable old gentleman

I was totally swayed by my mares name.

I went to view her having lost 2 young horses in the space of 6 months. I was pretty close to hanging up my boots for good, I was so sad and missing them so badly but really not sure I wanted another....

When they told me her name was Remembrance I was sold 😊

I'm a bit terrible with names because I tend to be very fond of horses named after ships - hunters called Dauntless; ponies called Pickle; all that sort of thing.

Our first pony was called "Woodstock Cailin Bui" Woodstock yellow girl, a dun connie by Templebready Fear Bui. When we got the next Irish pony, we got the chance to name him and he became An Buachaille Liath, the Grey pony. A bit of a Gaelic thing going on here and apologies if I have got the spelling wrong. the next one was an eventer by Ricardo Z (there's a Rebel somewhere in the breeding) so he became Donnrua Rebel (Chestnut Rebel). Present horse is called Langaller Bisto, my trainer insists on calling him Bovril which is better than marmite! Yes, names do matter. I also have a Weshie called Iddy, Idiot to people who know him, Idris is the name on his passport!
