As above - since i have been at this new yard no one seams to ride except in the outdoor school. Today i have asked 6 different folks if they want to come for a hack over the chase - i even have the transport to get us there and everyone has said no, day off, horse not fit??? we were only going for a plod !, my horse only goes in trailers, ime having a lesson tonight - or i would rather go for a hack on the roads agagagagag. It must be me - so giving up asking now.

Such a shame especially after reading the "no transport" post, and my boy is not a good hack on his own. So have roped OH to come over the chase with me on his bike tomorrow.

Can you hook up with someone on here, esp if you have transport?

I know what you mean though. I am on a big yard and there are a lot of people who never ride out. I have left 2 yards before because noone did anything at all!

i'm at a yard like that there are so many people who you kind of wonder why they have horses as they are either scared of them or just cannot be bothered with them, theres only like one person i hack out with from my yard not including my little sister! there are others who hack out from the other yards on the estate but not people who i hack out with

I was on a yard where I was the the only one who rode, I used to meet up with other people. Now I am on a yard where people do ride and they are all more friendly.:)

It's fascinating to me how different people see this sort of rebuff. You see me, I'd be thinking I'd really upset them all and / or that they didn't like me. You just see them as stick in the muds.

I keep my pony on my dad's land, but opposite is a livery yard. I was so excited, thinking i would have company to ride out etc. but not one of them ride out with me, nor will they even acknowledge my exsistance! I've even been ignored when passing and saying 'hello' to them!!!! They dont seem to ride their horses out or do much with them. Its strange, some people are just right odd balls and snobby with horse ownership. Nevermind hey!!! :D x

Thats how i see it too - that i am mrs snobbie sod so no-one wants to ride out with me! my little lad who can go anywhere is laid up, so last year it was all the horses and no transport and this year its transport but no horse ! aghghghghgghh

I am at a yard where no one else rides. People have horses that are either old, broken, the owners don't have time and one woman is scared of her horse. It is a bit annoying but I don't mind too much as my mare is better out hacking alone and I enjoy it!

What a shame. I can only tow one horse in my trailer and no-one else has transport at the moment so everyone at our yard would bite your hand off for an offer like that.

People do ride at my yard but also seem to mostly use the school, I've only seen people hack a handful of times.. I love hacking, and rarely use the school now I have my youngster backed so I would jump at the chance of a nice hack AND transport to get there!! How sad that your fellow liveries didnt..

My friend / trainer and I were just commenting on this exact thing last night, when we were the only two people left on a yard of over 30 horses at 7.30 last night!! There was one other person using the course of jumps that had been put up in our gorgeous outdoor school, and that was it. Pretty pathetic, considering we've got amazing facilities and fabulous hacking.
I was hacking with a friend yesterday morning, who said that she has invited the girl who shares paddocks with her loads of times to come to the beach with her, but this girl has turned her down (which is sinful because her cob is a darling who is as safe as a house and would LOVE the beach) and this same girl always has an excuse in the evenings why she can't ride.
Seriously, why do people have horses if they don't actually ride them?? Of course, those who have rescued old cronks that can't be ridden and are giving them a lovely time in their last years are excluded from this rant :)

It was only last year that I moved to a proper livery yard, I had always been on a private yard, and I realised that there is nothing as strange as folk! It really has opened my eyes. There are 18 horses at my yard and hardly any of them are ridden. To be fair a lot of them cant be ridden for some reason or another. The school hardly ever gets used and we are straight onto off road hacking. My mare has just had a foal after having time off for a back injury and I cant wait to get back on and ride.

i was at a yard in yorkshire and i loved it there but there was no riding going on lots of drinking coffee. i got quite lazy.
but now i have moved to another area and i ride every day its great

This might be going to get me shot down in the flames but... I keep my horse at a yard where 90% probably ride most days which is great for them. I however had a horrible couple of falls off my previous horse and totally lost my confidence. All im happy doing at the moment is getting on and off and quietly walking around a bit. Some days im not even happy to do that..

Every time I go to the yard I get "Are you riding today?" and people telling me that my horse needs more riding, snap out of it etc.. This just adds to the pressure that I already have put on myself regarding my lost confidence. We all pay the same to be on the yard and whether we ride once a week or a year if the horses are happy and well cared for why do people feel they can judge or comment on what everyone else is doing? Prior to being nervous I would have been the same but now from the other side so to speak I see things very differently.

People are treating be very differently now im not riding everyday and the tutting and comments are very noticeable. Maybe people have their own reasons for not riding and its their own business if they choose to own a horse...

the yard I just came off hd only one rider, and that was me. I just did (do) not understand, especially as some of the horses needed the exercise. Needless to say, when I backed my boy, everyone had advice and criticism, just could not believe it..... I did see one mare being lunged once - does that count ?

It is frustrating when you want to do something any nobody else is interested. I have noticed though that people seem more bothered by people having a horse they don't ride than they are if the horse is ridden but really badly or even abused! Most horses belonging to people who don't ride them don't care, they don't feel like they're missing anything.

Its used to drive me mad that no1 rode and i often had to go out on my own whenever i wanted to hack out!!! But now im on a yard were everyone seems to want to ride at the same time so getting in the school past 3pm is impossible as there are people whizzing up behind you, Leaving jump's out everywhere when you want to school and just stopping dead on the track to have a gab!! We have the fields but people dump so pretty scary stuff according to my boy s going round there at the moment is hard work!!!

Ahhh! I like my yard - I just ask anyone to hack out and have 3 or 4 regular hacking buddies - and mine is slighty bonkers so bounces most of the time.

I have fast hacking buddies and slow hacking buddies and sometimes all of us go to the pub :D

Having said that, I do tend to be the instigator - 'c'mon! lets go out!' and people tag along.

I'm also the one that gets all the jumps out for me, and everyone ends up joining in - just DO IT. Some people will follow your lead.

I find it baffling!!
All these people with horses they just dont ride!
I loaned a horse on a DIY yard and hardly ever saw anyone, when i did finally get someone to hack out with me, i waited for so long for her to get ready, then she said she was going to have a cup of tea first and i went on my own and it turned out she didnt ride anyway!!!

I now have my own horse and keep him on a very small yard with only 3 other horses and we ALL ride!
I try to ride every day and always talk to riders when they pass, why wouldnt i,
i dont get some people!!!

I have been wanting to ask the same question for ages.

We keep ours out 24/7, 365 and ride as often as possible, but there are literally dozens of ponies and horses around us that never leave their fields, why?

It is a complete puzzle to me why people go to all the trouble and expense of buying or renting land and buying a horse, then do nothing with it. As a couple of the 'unused' near us are very nice horses with real potential it really frustrates me (yes I know it's none of my business, but it does).

Also, why would anyone own an animal they are frightened of? Sell it, and buy a hamster or a goldfish or something.

I've been on yards with 10-30 people where I was either the only one, or one of about 3 that rode AT ALL! So it doesn't really surprise me :/ It's not like they had old/young/retired/insane horses either.... O.o

Are we talking Cannock Chase..............if so definitly up for a jolly!!
Meeting dwi next week for a hack around Foremark - can't wait...

I keep my boy on a private yard with the owners one ned, down the road is a livery yard, and I thought I would be sure to meet others out hacking from the yard and get to know them. I have been there over a year now and have only seen two people out hacking. It always amazes me when I drive past early in the morning that there is never anyone else at the yard!
It is a very expensive hobby if you don't even get the benefit of riding your horse.

I would bit the hand off someone who would offer me and ned transport to shows etc.!!!!!

At my yard the majority seem to ride near the crack of dawn, seemingly to avoid people, dogs, cars ... anything really, if they ride at all.

I am fortunate that I can ride at any time of the day and nothing seems to faze my boy.

I think the best thing you can do is tack up and ride out, then come back and say what a great time you and your horse had. That's what I did on my new yard. I'm older and far to short and fat than I should be, to be flying about on a young sportshorse and I think that's why I unintentionaly started a trend:D.
They must of thought, blimey, if she can do it on that, so can I!!;)

Been there, seen it, got the t shirt and made the video. They all 'competed' so did not hack, spent all their time in the two arenas 'schooling'. Laugh is there was one bsja rider and the rest went to about 1 local show a year. I just got on with it and went out on my own. Left said yard 3 years ago to a small livery yard withn 9 liveries. All of us hack, YO takes her eventers out in the morning one by one and all are welcome to come. We have those who like to plod, those who like a canter and those getting their eventers fit. Its great, we all ride and we all hack.

The yard im at theres like 25 liveries and literally only about 5 ride regularly and im one! Theres never any1 to hack with either :( its such a pain ... i used to hack evert sun wit mi friend but then she left :( am considering moving atm as every1 is sooo bitchy and 2faced ... god i h8 it there :( ... but i luv ridin my horsey so it keeps me going :)

Not many liveries at my yard, but mixture of school aged people, young horses, retired horses or RS ponies. Nobody hacks!

Fortunately I have a couple of friends on a nearby yard that do. However, I miss having company as am often at the yard alone; poo-picking, grooming, tacking-up.

Sometimes think I'd like to be on a much bigger yard with lots of people around, but it sounds like that doesn't = hackers!!

Hugs for you I am sure most us at one time have been in that situation.. hope you get your mojo back soon. when I lost my confidence I did lots of ground work with maizie which helped us both, now we hack out for a couple of hrs 4/5 times a week. Good luck x

My favorite yard that ive been on only had 8 of us that were DIY (the rest of the yard was full livery and seperate to the DIY) I was the only one who rode consistently. The others either worked too much, couldnt be bothered (so asked me to ride them, I didnt mind! :D ) or just kept their horse as a pet. TBF this actually really suited me! Not in selfish way. I liked being on the yard by myself and getting things done and doing what I want whilst spending time with my horse. Dont get me wrong i was really good friends with the other liveries (apart from one who was the reason we left) and we are still good friends now. 99% of the time I had the arena to myself and my horse was better to hack on him on his own which meant I could go the pace and distance I wanted. However if others wanted to go on a joint hack id be more than happy too! :)
