So the thought of dark nights and horrid weather are filling me with dread already! :(

Now the clocks have gone back I now get to the yard when its dark (work full time) and the YO has already finished and left as the horses are coming in by 3 now. I'm finding most of the time as its just me and 1 other livery on DIY no one else is really coming down and I'm spending my evenings at the yard by myself :(

I hate most things about winter, mud, less turnout, not having much motivation to ride, more costs for hay, I just cant wait for Spring! thinking I may have SAD!

Anyone else feeling the same?

I usually get past the New year before I start getting down about Winter but this year I am hating it already. I 'think' I'll feel better when mine are in at night as it at least means they are away from the mud and stay clean for longer then a nano-second, but in at night means more time, money and earlier mornings.

I don't think it's helping that I got a new horse 6 weeks ago that is proving to be a bit tricky so I'm not progressing with her as I thought I would. She's still hairy and needs more work but her trickiness is making it difficult to do the work with her that I need to.

Also they are at a yard half an hour from my house so I only see them once a day if I'm lucky!

Oh well, they'll be home (and therefore in at night) soon so hopefully having a routine will help and my TB will look better for being in and getting fed twice a day.

Yes, me, i'm feeling depressed already. I also work full time and hate the dark nights, my lack of motivation & the increased costs.

You are not alone :)

Am also currently suffering with a nasty tummy bug, which has made it all so much worse :(

Roll on Spring and fingers crossed for a better summer than we had this year!

I don't mind the snow, but the driving rain and wind is foul! Looking out my window now hoping that it'll clear up but seen as I have to leave in the next 30mins I don't think that'll be happening :(

I'm still waiting for summer. It'll be a long winter this year as the months of rain have made it seem like one long, grey, wet season.
Our yard is very quiet after 5 pm but luckily, I can usually manage to work my day around the horses, but it means the morning session rolls into the afternoon one with little else being done in between.

Another weirdo here! I love winter!
I do get really stressy about money and mud etc but actually I am not a heat person so summer is tough for me (even in the UK!) I can handle cold even wet days and I don't work afternoons so its not like the lack of daylight is the most major issue either for me!
I like clipped rugged ponies in big cosy beds :-)

^^^^^^^

I work full time so like you only get to the yard in the dark now. We are already in over night, so I'm already doing early mornings and dark late nights. And it's raining here  And I found her lame last night

I just take each day as it come (and its weather), deal with it as best I can and move onto the next day. I already have a good winter routine and plenty of the right clothes to make it tolerable. We have only two months to go until the shortest day and then it is just a matter of getting through January. Although February can be horrible weather wise, there are those lovely glimmers of hope that spring is around the corner with the snowdrops appearing etc.
Having said that, I do like the cold dry days when the mud dries up and everything is still and peaceful.

We don't have a yard, just a field. I work in London so don't normally get in until quarter past 6. It started to get dark by 7 last month so was already suffering with the dark before the clocks went back!

In winter, I use a floodlit menage over the road but this means walking down the road (on the pavement!) and across the field in the dark. Also means poo picking in the dark with a head torch! Hate it most when it gets cold. Most annoying thing is literally get in from work, get changed and go to the field. Don't get home normally until about half 8, quarter to 9. By that time I'm cold and starving for dinner!

Was thinking the other day that I've not found it too bad this year. The I realised I've probably got another 6 months until I can hack out again after work...

OP, I know how you feel. Horse is all snug in field shelter eating hay while I'm picking up her poo. I'm alone apart from the creepy fox that watches me from the bushes. Hate that!

I'm still waiting for summer.

Me too. I don't remember us having one this year!

I love snow and frosts but hate the dark evenings, as I type this is is 3.20pm overcast and gloomy :(. My spotlight bulb has gone and I will have to turn on my desklamp soon so that I can read the info on my desk - I am in a bar conversion with lots of windows! I hate driving home in the dark and the grizzly rain. Out come the Uggs and Hoodies for the next four months ...

Yes and no. I hate the mud but I don't mind the actual cold weather and I quite enjoy frost and snow. It's really just the mud that annoys me!

Having said that I am fortunate to keep horses at the family home. They live out 24/7 with shelter and light rugging as necessary but except for checking/changing rugs as appropriate, it's not really any more work than the rest of the year. I don't ride if I don't want to and horses are quite happy munching on a pile of hay and generally amusing themselves. :)

The most cheering thought is that the really cold weather means the shetland pony goes frosty sometimes. He's so well insulated that the heat doesn't escape and he looks all fluffy and glorious. What's not to love about that?! :p

ME! you are not alone!

this is going to be my first proper winter as a horse owner.. well owner of 2! and i hate it already, its too cold! and the rain just makes it worse.. i wouldnt mind that much if it was cold and dry but its COLD AND WET! :( Im already wearing layers and layers looking like the Michellin man! :D

I can deal with mud and rain its not nice but its bare-able but being cold and just not warming up is the worst feeling specially when your toes and fingers hurt cause there freeeezing :( X

thanks guys :) nice to know its not just me feeling like crap at the mo, it doesnt help the the OH is already stressing about how much Leo is going to cost us over the winter, so its adding to my worries :(

I've learned to love winter. No point in wishing half my life away. I love the log fire and casseroles and crisp frosty mornings. I love the fluffy horses in their field , shoeless and having time off. I love the rustle of straw and thge smell of the hay. I even like mucking out. Then theres cosy meals in the village pub, hunting, shooting, friends round for a drink. DVD's when its raining. Walks iin the fields. Its ok for me.

Im in the hate boat .... the clocks have only just changed and ive already forgotten what my girl looks like in daylight :(

I love this too but it takes me a couple of weeks to adjust to the extra work involved with all three being in at night. I'm very organised and get everything done quickly but as I'm getting older I find I get tired for the first month or so, then I seem to build up stamina... at least that's what's happened in previous years - here's hoping it'll happen this year! :D

As horsesforever says.. no point in wishing half a life away!!!

YES!

I too get low when light levels are less.

My field gateways are already poached and an absolute horror to get through. Currently looking at getting 20 tonnes of hardcore scalpings delivered as it's not even the end of October yet (technically.....) and I am slopping about the place ankle deep in mud :(

The thought of these conditions for months on end is just too depressing to contemplate.
