I did a double take yesterday when I saw someone at the yard tipping a tin of rice pudding into one of their feed buckets (on top of chaff etc). They said it was for one of the 'skinnys'. My horse is definately not a skinny so won't be getting any but just interested to see if anyone else does this as it was a new one on me. Have heard of feeding natural yoghurt as cheap pro-biotic and I'm sure one of the show horses on a yard I used to work on many moons ago was fed goats milk in her feed for condition(I may be imagining this, it was a long time ago but sure it was something like that):)

iirc in australia they feed rice-based feeds for conditioning.. not sure about rice pudding though, never heard of that before

that said, i feed my horse bananas - he goes mad for them, skin and all!

so does mine! hence my name haha. i can even hide bute in them and she'll still eat them!

Equi-jewel has rice fat in it and it cost around £35 so rice pudding is probably not as healthy for your horse. Expect diabetes...

Never seen it with horses, but OH's family did it with their dog. They bought the runt of the litter (felt sorry for it), and on RP it turned into a muscled, fit bruiser of a Cavalier Spaniel!

I bought a book about arab horses and the traditional management in the UAE. It says that the only way that their horses could survive in the desert was by drinking drank camels' milk and eating dates (like the people).

I guess they have varied tastes, rice pudding too :D

Never tried ours on rice pudding, but give them most things, if they
don't like something they don't eat it.
The first time I gave our new horse a gingersnap biscuit he refused to take it,
but was intrigued and nibbled at it, now it's straight in and crunched, this same
horse will eat banana but spits the skin out

Yes I use to feed it regularly to our old stallion when we showed him as a youngster. Mind you we were lucky in that we lived near the Ambrosia factory and could buy seconds which were sold off for animal feed and a lot of people used to buy it for whelping dogs or the farmers to feed their collies.

Certainly didn't do any harm and helped to keep the weight on especially as our old boy is now 25 and still going strong under saddle.

Completely off-topic, but my dad's house overlooks the Ambrosia factory - were you in Leat or Tinhay?

Oh, and Toffee44 - I'm with you in putting it my MY feed-bowl rather than the horses, but don't buy it, MAKE IT!! Much tastier, and probably one of the easiest things you can cook.
