Anyone else notice something odd

Someone told me once about using very lightweight hollow metal poles, not to hurt horses but they made a loud unpleasant clanging noise if hit, which in itself was enough to make horses not wish to hit them again, and therefore pick their feet up better.

Not saying I approve of this, but I suppose at least it's better than nasty heavy metal poles that would actually hurt.

Don't get me started on rapping! My horse has been rapped in the past (or so we think), and gets very stressy when showjumping, bombs around, has been known to fall over when doing an open class a few years ago on top of his rider because he was going so fast, and is known to throw in dirty stops. We're gradually getting there, but it's taken 2 years to get as far as we have.
