I am saving up to buy my own horse. I have been trying to put a fair few hundred pounds (as close to £500) away in my savings account, but unfortunately, this month I have had my nephews 1 st birthday, fathers day and my parents wedding anniversary, so it has been dipped into a few times this month :(

I have managed to sell a few bits on ebay, and hoping to get my previous HTC phone on there this weekend, which will hopefully bring in some cash (it was sold last week, but buyer pulled out because apparently their account was used by someone at work, who bidded on the phone without their permission... well don't leave yourself logged in then!! GRR!!)

Anyone else got any ways of getting a bit of extra money each month? Unfortunately, next month I have to pay for a new cambelt and waterpump on the car (£400!!) and then the month after it must go in for a service!!

A good friend of mine offered to lend me some money, as I had found a horse I was really interested in, but OH says thats not a good idea (even though said friend offered!)

I guess I am feeling a little bit down, as it seems I am always waiting... and waiting... oh and a bit more waiting... :(

I'm trying to aswell - been trying horses up to £1500 as not afraid of doing the work etc ex racers or whatever but each month seems to have something that takes a chunk out of my wages!

i am too! fortunately though, i have £2000 already. maybe take a loan from a family member or write up a contract with the friend to pay them back at least so much a month, and more if you can afford it?

good luck!

400 to get a cambelt done! Garages are roobbers!

Ask about if someone wants to do it as a homer, kit should be a hundred odd, they might take 100 for labour!

problem i have is that i save every month but only in my head! reality is that once you have horses you will find that if you are struggling now then you could run into trouble later when you have a horse. i am sure you are aware but sometimes people forget that they are and can be very expensive to keep, i have paid over 2000 in the last 6 months on vet bills alone (not insurance jobs either- hard cash!)

make sure you can truly afford it maybe share or loan first? , enjoy it when you do get one and i hope it all goes well for you :)

Me. I opened a new saving account a few months ago and a set amount goes in automatically every month. Im saving for a sidesaddle and habit.
I saving a bit of money at the moment by not buying toiletries and cosmetics, Im just using up everything ive got lying around.
I had a load of stuff from Lush which I stuffed in a cupboard ages ago when I stopped buying from them, but Ive got it out to use up rather than waste it.

I don't really understand this situation. If it was me, I'd put the money needed for livery, farrier, feed, hay, bedding, wormer, in a separate bank account. It would be just as if I had a horse. After a year I'd have enough money to buy one.

This ^^^, unless you are lucky enough to have your own land, then livery and keep will cost about £150-£300 and that's on DIY!

Ditto sugarandspice

work out the costs of the horse and have that going out of your current account monthly as a direct debit into a savings account

Well, i'm trying to save, but ebay is stealing most of my money oh and food :o i'm 16 thou, so lucky enough to not have to pay any bills etc so all the money i should be able to save in theory. :p as someone pointed out about money issues etc, i think OP might be in the same situation as me though, that she can realistically afford to keep a horse, just doesn't have that initial 1, 2 or even more thousand lying around. thats my problem, i can afford to keep a horse, i've had a horse on full loan for a year and managed fine, went through a winter as well so i can afford the extra in winter too no problem, parents pay insurance, livery and any vet fees, i work pt, don't go out, don't buy anything for myself, and pay for the rest. we did fine and i had money for shows too. just neither of us has the spare couple of thousand lying around for the initial buy. :(

I am literally scraping the barrel when it comes to toiletries etc! I need a new mascara but at £10 a go, it can wait! I haven't bought any new clothes etc for a while, although very tempted!

I know horses are expensive (my OH tells me every day) but I have owned one of less money before, so I know I can do it!

I was so thrilled when my friend offered me the money, and she says the offer is always open. Guess I need to work on the OH a bit more. I would defo have sonethong drawn up in writing if I did borrow the money.

My target is 2500 for now, and so far I have 500 of it! I did have a grand!

As for cam belt, have to get done via garage otherwise it voids the warranty! Can't complain though as already used the warranty 3 times!!

do make sure parents are happy to carry on paying for a horses lifetime, loan horse can go back if it gets ill or your circumstances change but once you buy one...

...I would be concerned about the idea of buying a horse where you are dependent on parents for part of the upkeep esp in current economics.

Much better to only buy once you yourself can maintain the horse 100%, that way parents generosity can be the backstop for if some massive vet hospital bill comes in or something like that.

Its disheartening when the figures go down instead of up isnt it.

Im not sure how much is in my savings now, Im ignoring it till next spring/summer. My aim is a couple of thousand too.
Ive not had any new clothes for ages but thats more because I dont like shopping and dont go anywhere nice anyway:D

I am trying to save up to have a sand school built! I have £1500 and was going to get a loan but my boyfriend had a heart attack at the prospect! Desperately selling clothes and general stuff on eBay. Also trying to work over-time and just generally not buy anything! If only I could win the lottery, but I'm too tight to spend the money on a ticket - well I am trying to save after all!!;)

You do not NEED mascara, get a grip.
All you NEED to do is to borrow it.

i know, we've spoken about it and its all fine. most of the people my own age don't pay a penny towards their horse so they're totally dependant on parents yet they still have a horse or sometimes more. and trust me, they're not all rich :)

Agree most kids with ponies rely on parents. I'm really impressed how hard ppp works to keep hers and there are people who would bale her out with some hay or bedding if it went wrong. ;-) it's one of the benefits of being well liked! Seriously u should see the planning, missing out and work that goes into ppp's commitment to her previous horse.

This exactly - if you are struggling to put say £400 a month aside how will you be able to pay for livery/farrier/worming etc?

Agree with sugar & spice, put horse running costs aside for a year or two. If you find yourself dipping in then its proof it might be a struggle.
And not sure why pingpongpony should wait till she can afford all upkeep herself? My child doesn't pay for her pony so should she not have one either? If her parents have agreed to pay some costs then I don't see why they can't be relied on to continue?

Lippx you are not scraping the barrel with toiletries. That day comes when you're standing in the shop with your last 50p trying to decide which is more important, soap or toothpaste. Mascara, pfft! Luckily its been a while since things were that bad. Vaseline makes an ok mascara substitute.

We've been doing lots of saving in our house. At Christmas our card got refused in the pound shop of all places. Very embarrassing lol! We were two thousand five hundred pounds into our over draft so we decided to do as much as we could to get out of debt and live to our means. Six months down the line we have paid all of that back and seven hundred pounds on top.

Basically we cut back in every area we could. I had to feed a family of four on 150quid a month. We sold everything that sat idol. My husband is teacher so he used that skill and took on extra private tutoring. We stopped all spending and did days out to the moors and anything else that was free. Other things too but you get the gist.

In this time we realised how much we loved being out in the sticks roaming bout the moors so we made the decision to try to move out that way when we had paid everything off. We have just been accepted on a property in a beautiful little village where the school is less than five mins down the road and the possibility of two yards within five mins walking distance. So although it was depressing having nothing for that time good did eventually come from it. Keep at it taking small steps and remember the ultimate goal.

Regarding the keeping a horse thing, if you stumble on the right horse then it doesn't have to cost the world. Through the summer my girl survives on barely nothing with just a livery fee to pay out for. She is barefoot nd mainly self trims and when she is on hard feeds through the winter, it's the cheapest combination I've found for a barefoot diet. I know you can't fore see certain areas of horse ownership but you can be sensible and not get into buying this and that.

Keep going. When you finally have your horse all the slog will be worth it. Just to add we were also in debt a few years a go where we managed to pay off ten grand in eighteen months. Saving is hard but the day you hit your goal is awesome!

Wow, that's good going. Can I ask where you shopped? I'm sure I waste too much money. M

I agree with the suggestions to save the money you would spend keeping the horse each month. If you can't afford to save that amount every month you can't afford to keep the horse.

I am! I've just left school and am looking for a job :o

What i'm saving up for
-HORSE Number one on my list!
-Moped
-laptop

Wish me luck
