We've been turning out our two horses every day since it first snowed, and have been called mean (?) by a large number of people at our yard. Just wondering, is anyone else turning out in this weather?
ours haven't come in, was going to bring my mare in for a few hours today but the yard is just to dangerous and icy.
hayed well and hooves de iced and she is happy
Turning out? Mine are all living out 24/7! Far meaner to leave horses stuck in 24/7 I reckon. At least your two horses are getting some turnout and won't be going loopy like those others may well do when they get to finally go out.
Yes Ive been turning out, as long as she's adequately rugged and has enough hay to last the majority of the day she's fine. I hate her being in all day as well as at night!
Just to clarify wouldn't turn out if too dangerous to get across the yard or anything though. But clearly that's not the case at your yard as you are getting your two horses in and out daily.
Mine hate being stuck in. I have been turning them out for a few hours since the snow and they are happy to come in again once they have stretched their legs.
Ive managed to get mine out for about 2 hours a day, they are having to field share as fencing broken big time in another field, so its a bit of juggling until weather better. As long has they have a run around and good leg stretch which is important.
Nope but initially was because he cut his face open and vets said he had to stay in, by time it had healed enough the path to his field in completely impossible, uphill and the snow and is so THICK and his field is right near the top.
Yup - I am turning out every day in this. Although today I left a couple of oldies in with huge nets as they do tend to get fed up when it is actually snowing on them. But everything else is out for about 8 hours.
We should be reported then - ours have been out the entire time - all day every day! I guess it depends on how bad conditions are, but mine are quite happy. Brought them in for a groom yesterday, and they just wanted to go out again. They have ad-lib hay, and two fieldshelters between the two of them, plus natural shelter. They also have places to stand out of the snow. Far better to get them out if you have the opportunity. I am sure most people that have had no choice but to keep in the entire time & are tearing their hair out would agree!
I put our 3 out in the snow today, they were the only ones out. I was mean and put my two out without rugs for 10mins as i thought it would be nice for them to have a roll in the snow rugless
We turn our two out from about 10am until 6pm (it's still light here then). We've only had snow for three or four days but it was minus eight this morning and they went out without rugs for the day.
Well, we can get down to the field fine, they're turned out from 10-4 in big rugs with lots of hay. I just feel sorry for those people who are stuck on their yards because of the ice
Yes - mine goes out every day. I put salt on the concrete so make it safer, then put him out with hay and break the ice on his water. I cant think of a reason why not to.
Mine normally live out 24/7 (with field shelters & rugs). However they are on clay and their winter field was so rutted that when it froze they struggled (specially the old lad) and I worried they would injure themselves or break something.
They are now stables at night and on the summer field (which isn't poached and hopefully too hard to damage) during the day. However they are only getting about 5 hours a day out as they need to share, but they do at least have a chance to have some fun.
Mine have been out every day...they were rugless until I felt mean and rugged my older mare they have plenty of hay and good shelter...and the foal LOVES it he has been in his element..goes out *squeaking* every morning!! which I have never heard him do till the snow arrived
Mine's been out as normal, without hay however as he's a demon at ferreting grass out. I think he rather likes mining the snow. I know others have been haying, but on the yard, without exception, those have been the 'softer' horses - and that's in no way intended to offend!
My two live out, one is currently in though as he tried to kill himself last week (he's on suicide watch!!) My yearling is out with his friends, and happy that way! They get hayed and checked twice a day and have all been fine!

If you are mean, then i am down right cruel, ours are out 24/7, and only one has a rug on!!
My YO turns out for me weekday mornings but due to snow she didnt want to risk any accidents so last wed-fri Tia had to stay in.
I turned out for about 2hrs Sat morn (which meant galloping around and around her paddock in the snow for 5 mins before realising there was grass under the white stuff) then again this morning for 2 hrs (much calmer today). I hope my YO will turnout this week but the snow hasnt thawed so i'm not sure. My horse is much happier even if she has just been out for an hour or two than nothing at all.
