Not the horses, but young Phoebe dog collects up any shards that you fish out of a trough and runs off with them. I'm always mildly impressed that she can a)keep a grip of them in her mouth without breaking them and, b)run pretty quick while doing so

Aww I wish I still had the photos! We had a gorgeous little Connie x Welsh who had to have his eye removed. When he came back from the vets we were told to keep him in for a few days, my daughter then about 11 spent all those days collecting him ice and snow in piles outside his stable door. He was obsessed with it! Kept him very happy the whole time he was in then it was like Christmas came early when he was actually allowed out and free access ??

My first bitch, Nessie, loved ice. She loved finding ice on frozen puddles out on Winter walks, dug/gnawed a piece/chunk of it up (sometimes with a bit of human help), before trying to find herself the best spot to lie down to gnaw up the ice.

But it had to be outdoor ice, she weren't interested in man-made ice cubes.

Most of the horses I've ridden have picked up and crunched ice when they've found frozen puddles in the arena. I think it's the texture and the need to work those jaw muscles to break it.
