Anyone ever thought that this horse stuff is getting over complicated??

I didn't ride at all between the years of 1996-2002. When I started again I was shocked at how much more STUFF there was available for horses. I had never even seen a fly rug before, or KK or Myler bits, or half the mixes and chaffs available, or cortaflex, or magnetic leg wraps, or sports medicine type boots, elevator bridles, bendy stirrup irons, full seat breeches, air flocked saddles, three point breastplates, sheepskin lined over reach boots, or bling! Honestly.:eek:

Yep my break from horses was about the same time 1995 - 2002, and it did all go a bit mad in those years!

oh for the days of new zealand rugs (held together with bailing twine), dandy brushes, waxed jackets and muckers............. *sigh*

He he he :D nope, I'm definitely happier with my super-duper Rambo rugs, soft brushes, modern waterproofs and neoprene lined wellies ;)

Wouldn't go back to canvas rugs and waxed jackets if you paid me :D

Analysis paralysis
ha ha love that, I had it today when I was standing beside her for 10 mins with a rain sheet in one hand and a slightly heavier one in the other trying to decide!
I have rugs for every eventuality, from fly rugs (2 of) - 450g wnter one with a neck and some weights have 2 or 3.
When I decided to change feeds, my brain went into melt down with the choice and differing advice I had from the feed companies (went with top spec).
I have tried every bedding under the sun, straw, fine shavings, bigger shavings, bed max, and guess what, back on straw now!
Supplements - now there's a laugh, i have used garlic, oestress, magnitude, brewers yeast, seaweed, and a multitude of others, due to my self enforced economy drive she is on magnitude and oestress and is looking just as good as ever! I came to the conclusion that i was making expensive poo and wee!
My friend uses a bridle which is about 30 years old, she has 4 rugs plus a fly sheet, feeds very simply and her horse looks great.

It is all just mental, so in answer to your question, yes we definitely over complicate things. More money than sense really.

Anyone seen the light and gone back to the good old days? If so, have you saved much money? Seen any differences in horses etc?

I feed traditionally, straights, sugarbeet and chaff (although I do buy bagged chaff -remember hand cut chaff?????!!). I think this does save money, but I don't need any specialist feeds.

Other than that, I love modern rugs, modern joint supplements keep my horse working happily, my Neue Schule and KK bits are designed with the horses' anatomy in mind, my saddle definitely fits better than my old ones used to, and I love my patent leather bridle and my waterproof, windproof, lightweight, and trendy Pikeur and Anky jackets and breeches!!!! :)

I love the idea of feeding straights but wouldnt know where to start!!!

It's not rocket science, but I think the benefits or otherwise of feeding straights depends on my much hard feed your horse is getting. For me, a bog standard quality mix is a better option as I wouldn't use bags of straights quickly enough.

She gets quite a bit in the winter (or she did last winter because she lost a lot of weight)but just a bit of chaff and mug of pony nuts in summer for her vit/min supplement.
