Just a fun post to know if anyone is from a non-horsey background i.e. no one in your family rides and subsequently don't know anything about horses! My cousin asked me how did horses sleep and I told them standing up and they were really shocked! They thought horses would lie down to sleep like most animals! I also had a long conversation with my mum about a horse I was going to share and she said I couldn't possibly ride after work because it would be too dark and dangerous. I had to tell her I would be riding in a flood lit school and that I wouldn't totter around fields in the dark! Has anyone encountered funny stories with friends or family who don't know too much about horses?

Im from a non horsey background and damned frustrsting it is too- they think the horse does all the work and the rider just sits there

No one in my family knows anything about horses. Its taken me alot of hard work to get the chance to have a horse myself.
I can't think of any amusing conversations, although there has been plenty lol, I'm always being asked what things are

I have a huge family, not one other person rides, and never has (my twin sis rode a little when we were young but gave up at 13). I recently found out that my great grandfather was a blacksmith tho

My family are really unhorsey. My nans show a slight interest but not enough to have a conversation with them about.

My stepdad is really insensitive and when i stopped loaning my pony because i got too tall (he was 10.2 :P) he was all "Whats gonna happen to him now? I bet they'll send him to the meet farmer."

I wish my family were horsey it'd make it so much easier sometimes

I'm the only rider in my family too. Actually I think my dad is scared of horses. His words of wisdom are priceless though

. When we went to try my second pony his only comment was that he had a nice tail

Definitely from a non-horsey family, and with non-horsey neighbours too: last year a neighbour asked me why I was "torturing" Frodo for making him wear a fly mask (he thought I had blindfolded him!); another time, I had to hear another neighbour explain to her granchild that my shetland pony was my warmblood's foal (she thought a pony was just a baby warmblood)

Essentially I am. But my Grandfather rode horses in the first world war and my auntie and cousin had horses. They lived abroad so we didnt really know them well. My great great grandparents had horses and were farmers but when they died the family had to sell the farm due to inheritance tax and debts.

I'm from a non horsey back ground. My parents haven't seen me ride since i was about 12 and didn't even want to see my recent riding holiday pictures. It's really frustrating, but at least i never had those pushy pony club parents i see a lot, so it has it's up sides.

I was telling a friend the other day about that gorgeous bale jumping pony ad, and he said he thought horses cost a million pounds each. Pretty ridiculous really.

All my family and my OH think that riding isn't a sport, you just sit there. Very annoying.

I was adopted when I was 6 weeks old, and have always known that.
I have ridden since I was 7 or 8, after begging my completely non horsey adoptive parents for lessons. None of 'their' family is animaly in any way. They've never even met my beast, and I've had him 10 years!

I have only recently found out that my birth mother used to own, ride and work with horses.

Not sure if that means anything or not?

my parents rode at a riding school before i was born, and my mother is just about brave enough to push a feed bucket into a field, that's as horsey as my family are... apparently my great-grandfather was a London 'jarvey' though (horse-drawn taxi-cab driver!)
they all think i'm totally nuts, btw.
at a dinner party once someone starting having a go at me about how slowly we horsey people drive horseboxes, holding everyone up. when i said we have to corner slowly because otherwise the horses might fall over, this guy was genuinely flabbergasted, and said very matter-of-factly "why don't you make them lie down in the horsebox then?" Ummm....
that's about the unhorsiest comment i've ever had to deal with.

I've had a text from my sister asking how horses sleep and if they can sneeze.
Recently taught my mum to put on a headcollar and bring in my horse from the field!

Same here - Mum's family not horsey , but my Dad's family were ( he died when I was 16 months old , so most of it is hearsay & goes back a long way . )
A member of my Dad's family used to groom for Pat Smythe , but on my Mum's side , her sister loved horseracing & my great uncle learned to ride when he joined up in WW1 ( he lied about his age & was 15 when he was on the Somme . )

He loved horses all his life & used to help me when I was learning to ride as a child .
Mum liked horses , but was nervous of them & hated me using a whip , even though I only used it sparingly & correctly !

me and my 2 sisters came from a completely non hoersy background. And now our family has 3 and a half horses!! my mums slowly getting into it a bit, kind of treats the neddies like grandchildren :P
But yes, im often getting asked daft questions from parents and family members!

I'm the only horse rider in my family, sometimes it would be nice if they took an interest, but I'm used to it now.

I hear you Ashgrove! This is exactly me too!!

Me! But I am converting them all one by one... my sister has been pony trekking with me (she cantered on the beach, I was sooo proud of her!) and my mum, after a glass of wine, expresses an interest in learning to ride after she retires (apparently, I'm teaching her???????!)

Actually, it's not totally non-horsey, my grandma loves watching horses on TV and used to follow the hunt on foot until it got a bit too arduous for them to turn out in the cold and mud.

I am the only nutter that actually risks my neck with them though!

LOL Kerilli, might teach my horses "down" and "stay". Might make plaiting easier!!

Actually one of the most amusing comments I ever heard was, unfortunately, from a horsey person - a YO! My old trainer was about to move yards and we all (trainer + around ten clients) went to see this potential new place that they were completing then. They were building an indoor arena and the YO said they could maybe accommodate our wishes, if we thought of anything which could be useful etc. So we said that we really could do with mirrors, ideally the whole short side and two down the long side.

The YO was genuinely surprised, and politely informed us that there would be a bathroom and there would be a mirror inside the bathroom

OMG! He thought we needed mirrors to redo our makeup whilst riding or something

I'm the only horsey person in my family. I've converted my daughter though and my dad used to spend ages talking to the horses at my yard.

My family and OH's family are so non-horsey that they won't go anywhere near a horse. I've been horse and pony mad since I wasy tiny but didn't get my own horse until I was 30 and had a good job, house with stable and field alongside. It has been a very long wait. I find life really difficult when family come to stay, or we go visiting family as they just don't understand the comittment in time or money.

All credit to my late Mum though as she paid for lessons ( but wasn't keen on watching - thought I'd fall off & hurt myself ) , bought me jodhpurs , jackets , etc & when I had a fairly serious riding accident in my teens , never once asked me if enough was enough .

My mum and dad, although they loved all animals, were totally unhorsey...however, my mum did tell me that my great-grandad worked with horses. He was kicked in the chest, developed pneumonia and died, which contributed to my mum's view that horses were dangerous at both ends and uncomfortable in the middle. I nurture a hope that my grandson might become a horse fan; he is only 3 but the first things he does when he visits me are 1) fill up my pony's bucket with balancer from the sack in the hall and 2) fetch my wellies! He visited last week bearing a bunch of flowers for me and a carrot for pony...he dropped the flowers on the hall floor and thrust the carrot into my hands...he puts pony first, bless him.

Bless my uncle, the last time he saw me ride (years ago) he arrived just in time to see me go sailing through the air, skid through a puddle in the sand school and stop courtesy of a fence post

Not only did I have to sit on a plastic bag all the way home (he loves his car) but everytime I see him now, he asks me if I've fallen off recently.

I think he's scarred for life!

Me! I was a pony mad child but nobody understood my desperation for riding lessons!
I was 30 before I was in the position to buy my own horse. My mum now quite likes coming up to the yard to see my horse but she is a little wary!
