Roy is on a replacement passport and I think and the vet thinks that he is younger. Interested to hear thoughts on his teeth. Or links to good resources as I haven’t been able to find any clear explanations and diagrams.

Passport says DOB 01/01/2017... I have a 4 yo on an original passport who was 4 on 3 June 2021, & his teeth look more 'advanced' than Roy's. I know it's not an exact science, but... Coupled with physical immaturity. Physically, he looks on the 3 side of 4 rather than the 5 side.

It's been a busy few weeks for him. He's been trimmed, & his feet are now looking almost normal. I had never seen feet quite that shape before...farrier said that they had been left to get verrrrrrrry long & then hacked off, hence weird wonky growth lines. He's had his teeth done - v bad & a mouthful of ulcers. I have been told to do 4-6 weeks' groundwork in a halter while his mouth heals. I have had an expert in groundwork out to show me what to do - atm we're doing raised trot poles. I also had a chiro out & have now got him a massage gun for use daily. I have ordered some NAF Thrive. He is getting stronger all the time & actually seems to want to work. He is getting into the routine here of coming down to be fed twice a day, knows what to do with bucket feed & is a lot less clueless re picking out feet.

Comparing to Dave's at 4.5 they look very similar.
This pic looks a bit grim, but his bottom tooth had just popped up & pushed the baby tooth out. Pic sent to dentist, dentist responded with"4 Year old? Absolutely normal"

Nice horse !

His mane and tail don't have any baby fluffiness left - he's obviously totally lacking in muscle tone, but I think he looks like a unworked 4 y/o, perhaps one who hasn't had a large turnout/much movement?

Is he a TB, would explain his birthday? If so he could have been born any day in 2017.
He looks like a 4 year old to me. Good luck with him!

Not sure how it is phrased these days, but back in the day that mouth (Catembi's horse) would have been described as a 4 year old rising 5 - or just rising 5. At the second part of the year I always refer to mine as, for instance (the 10 year old) rising 11. and at the first half of that year he would have been referred to as 10 years old. Now I've read that back it sounds complicated but it really isn't lol!

He does look rather nice Catembi, I can imagine in a years time with more work and the correct exercise he will be very nice indeed.

I don’t have a scooby about his age but a nice young horse with a good attitude - priceless. I really hope your luck has changed with this one Catembi and you have years of fun and success with Roy.

Replacement passport was issued May 2020. It’s just that Finn was 4 on June 3rd and Roy’s teeth if anything are less mature when his passport says he’s older. Maybe he was a summer baby, so using 1 Jan has added quite a few months to his notional age. I was just worried that I might be doing too much with him if he’s actually a whole year younger, but if he’s 4-ish, we are probably okay. After all, we are doing groundwork, not team chasing ?

Whoever got his replacement passport didn't care about putting down even a vague correct birth date hence 1/1/2017. It could well be he was a late summer baby and given he has basically been dumped in a field his entire life you would expect him to be a little less physically mature than all of these that have done futurities and faff since they were foals.

Thoroughbreds have their actual birth dates in their passports btw not just 1/1/....

It's not even a Weatherby's passport (Trev the ex racer has one). It's Pet ID Equine. Breeding is completely unrecorded. Trev's passport does indeed have his correct DoB of 4 Feb.

So if Roy's four or four and a half, he's okay to be doing what I'm doing, which is groundwork to build some strength while his mouth heals, with a view to doing some ridden work when he's stronger. We are only doing a timed 20 mins.

He is already looking less runty & fills the eye better, & the linseed has given him a shine. I just wish the wretched grass warts would go! He really does have a face full.
