I went on a BE taster day last weekend and really enjoyed it. So much so that I'm thinking of doing another - they seem like a great way to practice all 3 disciplines and get experience of a potential BE 80 venue.

But only if there is enough stuff to jump around or below 80 and if it's a supportive instructor. There is one in April at Ely Eventing with Michael Paveley. Worth giving up Easter Sunday lunch for, or should I go to Quainton the day before, for their dressage and sj combined event instead?

I assume anyone doing a taster day for non members will know there may be some wobbly nervous riders like myself !

It would however mean I might then have THREE training tickets for a BE80. Lawks :-)

I have done a taster day with Michael Paveley. Not at Ely though but I have been to Ely where they have loads of fences at all different heights. They do run BE80 so lots of jumps around that height. The soil is peaty so the ground is usually good.
Michael is great, possibly not for the feint hearted as he is a pretty much a ' just keep kicking it', kind of guy. Not sure if he would be my first choice if I was really nervous but you are right, it is aimed at beginners. We did a dressage session which focused on circles and being straight down the centre line and then a break and then on to SJ. I think he talked about how to warm up and then we jumped a couple of rounds. Make sure you are reasonably fit for the cross country as he put together lots of little courses of about 6 fences each. I had only had my horse a few weeks so it was a good way to test him out. At the end we got a free training pass for BE. It's a great way to have a go and practise at a BE venue.

I did a taster day last month with MP last month at Poplar Park. Enjoyed it so much I'm also considering the Ely one. I thought he was great, there were 2 groups on the day (ours was the very novice one) and it gave me so much confidence. Our group really was focussed on very beginners.

I have had quite a few lessons with him and cant rate him highly enough, I firstly had jumping lessons then also for dressage and he was brilliant, the right amount of pushing me out of my comfort zone without making it so difficult I felt rubbish! I teach myself and have found lots of great ideas from him :)

Oh brill, that's helpful everyone, thank you. Particularly about whether he's ok with those who are starting out and the jumping options at Ely.

CC - we should be ok to manage some mini xc courses. We did the last BE taster day ok and I felt we both had a bit more left in the tank at the end of the day :-) I was even able to walk ok the next day haha. My problem is I do a bit too much 'just kick it' so I might get on alright with him!

Farma - sounds like just the right balance, pushing you but without going so far as to lose confidence.

CF - maybe see you there :-) Glad you had a good day though. They seem like a brilliant way to get an idea of what's involved. Do you think you'll do a BE event this year?

I've not had a lesson with him, but he's a nice guy. I'm tempted to go to one of his at Ely or Stratford Hills.

I did one with him at Stratford Hills and found it a bit 'meh' but I suspect that was in part because of the group I was in - I needed pushing and more technical lines, the others needed hand holding (not saying there's anything wrong with that but just meant I didn't get much out of the session)

I'm a Wobbleberry so that's the plan!

I've booked onto the Ely one. I'd like to have a practice as if I'm feeling confident I might enter for an earlier BE there, think it's in July.

Yeah, good on you. Me too

At the moment I think I'm a bit in between these two, but at a far lower level than you so suspect that should be fine for me!

The Attington was was good - felt within my comfort zone, in a good way. I was eyeing up a couple of bigger ones that I felt we could handle as well. Nice to leave wanting more, so hoping to keep building up gradually from there

I know him, not well, but professionally rather than as a trainer, so I can't really comment on that. But you're massively more experienced XC than me. I've schooled half a dozen times in my life, Dae's only popped a few fences once. I struggle to imagine an XC group too basic for me! Anyway, I'll only go to one if it doesn't clash with polocrosse as I seem to be addicted to that instead right now ;)

Haha, that wasn't suppose to be directed at you, I clicked the wrong button ;) I know a lot of people who rate him, I think Hottotrot used to have regular lessons with him, but just thought I'd give the other side for balance ;)

I did wonder ;) Balance is always good - as I say, I've no idea what he's like as a trainer anyway :D
