Hi there, Im interesed in getting a puppy of one of the above breeds and would like to hear your experences of them. I would like a bitch and it would be kept as a pet and would have to live with our 1 year old ShizTu.

Also pictures of your dogs if possible :D

Border Terriers are fabby wee dogs-- and absoultely adore the Norfolk that I groom. I'm not as mad keen on the Norwich that I know, but that could be the dog, rather than a breed thing.

My grandparents have a Border terrier and he is fab! He's quiet... he will bark when a car drives into the yard (the dogs are outside) but there is rarely a peep out of him otherwise, friendly with strangers, great with kids and will play ball for hours on end, and great with other dogs as well whether he has met them before or not. He's happy to go for day long hikes across the countryside or just stay inside all day by the fire when the weather is bad. His coat is easily kept, grandparents learnt easily how to strip the coat.

I love him and can't wait to have one of my own...

Who can say no to this face :D

Aww they are just so lovely! I really want one but they are all quite expensive. I really cant afford the £600+ for one. I guess i will just have to wait for a cheap litter to come up or keep saving!

Thanks for your replies :)

Border Terrier!!

I have 2, one is 14 now and still going strong and the other is just 6 months. Both of mine are fab with little kids, even the old grumpy one!

I'll try to hunt out some piccies.... It is impossible to say no to a little border face :)

No don't just wait for a cheap litter to come up thats the worst thing to do.

they are usually puppy mills or back yard breeders who are the cause of the massive amount of dogs that are killed every year in shelters

The least you can do is find a responsible breeder who health tests

I think East Kent and Maesfen have both bred Borders in the past, they should be able to recommend some good people to speak to, re pups?

Agree, quality is worth paying for, especially if both parents are good stock/workers/proven/health tested.

If you're stuck come back to me OP, there are a couple of good reputable GSD breeders who also breed Borders.

Thanks for that. We got our Shihzu from a proper breeder but he was only £200 as aposed to £600, as they didnt register that litter but had all the usually health checks. I was hoping to find something similar this time.

I very nearly had a Border back in March this year...he was a fab wee thing! He was a bit too much for his current owners and could be a cheeky *****e if allowed to get away with anything, but it was never in a nasty way, just naughty! He ran himself ragged running around after my spaniel, but once he'd been out for a decent run, he was quite happy to curl up on the sofa....erm DOG BED....yes, he was on the dog bed, not the sofa. Nope. Definitely not. :o

(Off topic, but I can't believe that was only Feb/March this year...so much has happened since then )

This sounds like it was not a proper breeder if they didn't register the litter and health checks are VERY different to health tests!

Sounds like you could do with a little reserch into health tests and BYB's.

Agree, a vet check isn't a health test on breeding stock, but do your homework and I am sure you could end up with a great dog that won't break the bank :)

In fairness to the OP our last GSD bitch was £200 at nine months and both parents were hipscored, mother born in quarantine, father was a German import, working titled, she just wasn't show quality (er, she looked like a cross between a cow and a bumble bee :p) and it was mates rates but we still got a bargain.

I have a Norfolk Terrier. I always wanted a Border or a Norfolk but always ended up with whatever turned up.
The Norfolk was given to us as he was terrorising people where he lived and the owners were scared he would get kicked to death.
He is no longer agressive but a mad lovable boy.
Have you thought of looking at a rescue centre?

I wouldnt buy from a puppy farm, were we got our shihzu from was not a puppy farm, we did our research on them before going to see the puppy. It might not of been from a show/K.C breeder but they were all checked by a vet and were in good heath, we saw both parents, other offspring and their other dogs and were aloud to look around their place.

I dont want a dog that is K.C registered, it just adds pounds on to their price. I want a dog that is in good health and has come from a nice home. I will not fuel puppy farms but i do not see why these dogs have to be so expensive either, there are genuine people around who will sell them for £200/300 as they are a one off litter or just want to sell them to nice homes.

Uh another one of those people. Maybe you could do some serious research on why they are more expensive and why health TESTS are so important.

Because buying from a BYB which is what the people you are talking about are is fueling the death of dogs in shelters every year.

But you probably won't.

Point me in the right direction then

Tbf you dont see many shihzu's in rescuse homes, only staffie and such like, iv not heard of shihzu's dieing or being put down in rescue homes, only staffies and such like as they cant rehome them.

I'm not saying you need to get a dog from a rescue.
Its the general over breeding of dogs. Doesn't matter what breed.

You need health tested parents at the least and to get that they need to be KC registered.

People that are aiming to better the breed are the only people that should be breeding and the only people others should be getting puppies from.

Not to derail the thread too much, you certainly do get shitzhus in rescue - scroll down to the last guy on this post :(

I agree, you might check out a rescue dog, as horses16 says, for most breeds, there is a dedicated rescue :)

And you could try contacting breed clubs for an older youngster who hasn't made the grade for showing, like ours, young adults can be a bit cheaper if you're determined to buy rather than rescue.
Like I say, our last bitch was £200 and our current two were £300 each, bred in the purple and their parents had every available health test, they just weren't for the showring and any health problems will be easily traceable - don't laugh too much, guys :p .

Betsy's litter were sold for £450 each, we got her mates rates :p.
Both parents were hipscored altough HD is not highly common in the breed, her mum is a cracking little yard dog / rat killing machine / pet and her dad is primarily a pet that does some showing. We wanted a pet that could come to the yard and kill afew furrys so it was a good match for us (And her daddy is soooo handsome!) but I'm sure that far better litters would be available for those wanting a dog for show / working purposes. I think you really need to look around / know what you want from a pup when you are searching litters, price should be the last thing to look at IMO.

I have never seen BT's advertised for £600, I do not regret one penny of the money spent on B and was fully prepared to pay the £450.... I just happen to have friends in the right places! And I had pick of the litter!! (Yes I know.... I picked the gobby runt....)

Excatly what im looking for.

Also just to say that i know that shihzu's do end up in rescue homes but they are not as common as other breeds.

also just to say thanks for the websites for rescue ones. We have had dogs from the RSCPA and such like before but we want a puppy that dosnt have the added baggage of having to be rescued or gone through a bad time. That said, if a litter from a rescue home came up i would be the first to look at them. We just dont want a dog with extra baggage atm, we want to train her to be how we want her to be and alot of them have been through a hard time and this is sometimes not possible to overcome.
