where do you keep your horse?????

I live in Clapham, South London and currently travel to Epping to ride (not a hugely practical journey!).

We are planning to move, so hopefully it will no longer be a problem - but I wondered where other people ride and keep their horses?

I used to live in Streatham and have kept horses in Tooting, Battersea and Brixton! Those yards are gone now. Most of my horsey friends who stayed in the area head for the A3 to Wimbledon, Richmond and towards Cobham now for their horsey fix.

I live in Peckham - but my horse lives in Suffolk (complex I know...)

I have been desperately trying to find somewhere suitable and near here to keep him, but is very tricky!

I sometimes go to Bexley for riding lessons (mount mascal stables) or to Lee valley Stables in Hackney/Leyton area.

But for clapham, I would guess Wimbledon or Richmond might be your best bet?

Are you looking for livery? This post might be of interest?

Be interested to hear if you do find anywhere near this area! Dulwich riding centre is nearest for me and they don't do livery. There is also Willow Tree Riding Establishment, but again I don't believe they do livery - could be wrong.

I'm croydon based and keep my boy in Banstead but moving to a yard in Epsom this week.....

Hacking is lovely around there - don't particularly like kent way for riding schools etc - had quite a few bad experiences there!

far too pricey down there - they should open a stables in Peckham - would please me....

Did you know they are starting a riding school in Brixton?

good - the more people get exposed to real animals the better - survey report in papers today that 10% of kids (varied with the question) didn't realise where eggs, bacon came from - very very sad

Riding isn't cheap full stop once you get to the south of London then into Surrey & Sussex

Richmond Park is gorgeous and somewhere where I really want to ride one day. It's got plenty of sandy tracks/bridleways on it

Does anyone know anything about this yard in Brixton? When is it opening? Not much info on the link!! There was/is a yard in Shakespeare Road, Brixton, but I have never seen it, although there is a warning sign that horses use the road...its near Brockwell Park. Anyone heard of it? I once found a yard charging £20 a week in Kennington for D.I.Y livery, but there was no turnout. There are some disused stables in Crystal Palace Park which are being turned into a bar - great

there are also a set of stables (again, no turnout) in Bermondsey, but I think you have to know someone to stable a horse there - again, very cheap, around £30 a week I think. Riding in London is extortionate - Hyde Park now charge up to £90 an hour, so I've heard! Its a shame there are no stables in Clapham - the Common is wonderful. There is a man who exercises his horse on the common - he keeps it at Streatham, but I have no idea where the yard could be there. Maybe he keeps it in his garden?!! Maybe us Londoners should club together to rent some land and inject some pony power back in to the City!

There was an awesome photo in TimeOut a few weeks ago of a man on his coloured cob in Brixton. London prices arnt worth it for livery, cuz there is little to no turnout. Most people I know who live in London "proper" with horses keep them on yards close to the A3 corridor, and lots of them use full livery.

Yea thats the guy!my dad used to work next to the common, and theres stable by the Oval becuase I saw an ad for them in H+H. Im trying to find a pic of him (cob man not my dad!)

There is no livery at Stag Lodge. You could try Kingston Riding Centre - I have no idea what their prices are like, but you can get a train from Clapham Junction to Kingston in 19 minutes and then the 85 bus.

The stables near the Oval is probably Vauxhall City Farm, there was an article recently in H & H about them; they have a nice school but no turnout. Up until about 10/12 years ago South London was a thriving horsey community. We had the South London branch of the PC, South London Saddle Club and the Wandle Riding & Driving club. Regular shows were held on Tooting Bec Common, Peckham Rye, Brockwell Park, Clapham Common, Belair Park. Dane Rawlings learned to ride at Dulwich Riding School and was a SLPC member.
I would LOVE to see this revived again!

Ahhh that would be amazing!! There are so many disused areas just WAITING for a project like that to come along!!

I live near your area Abi_88, and currently keep my horse in N. London! but hopefully moving to Epsom area if the yard I see on the w/e suits

Ahhh I know exactly where you mean. Pity, that would be handy.

Actually I know someone who was very involved in South London Pony Club at Dean City Farm - would be great if it was still running!

I live in Epsom and keep my horses in Chessington. I work at a livery yard at the weekend and most of the horses there were previously kept on working livery at wimbledon village.

There is, as I said, a yard at Kennington. 6 stables, tiny turnout. I know the guy who runs it. There are some lovely rides in Hyde Park nearby and Vauxhall City Farm hire out their school in the evenings. If anyone would be interested in sharing a horse (I do not have the time/money for a full time owner) at this yard then get in touch! I would be looking to buy an Arab and to do some long distance riding, but would be flexible on the days to ride etc.

I never knew there used to be all of these horse places... such a shame - would love to ride on Peckham Rye

Lemonade - the yard in Kennington sounds nice - don't supposed there are any spare stables there?! That would be much closer than Suffolk

and my beastie doesn't get vast amounts of turnout at the mo anyway...

Yes - as far as I know there are still places available in the stables in Kennington. I can take you down there if you like. What kind of beastie do you have? As I said, I am keen on getting a horse of my own and keeping it there - as long as the lack of turnout doesn't bore him!!
