I have thought about sewing some numnahs, because I like weird colour combos that you can't seem to buy! Browbands look like great fun to make. Also got a slight hankering over a giraffe print fly veil... :o

So does anyone make their own horsey stuff? Let's see pics!! :D

I am debating a numnah too, I like sewing, have gone off it recently and could do with a simple project, have a few pretty fabrics around! My saddle never seems to fit saddle shaped numnahs so might try and make one the right shape :-)

Zig zag ribbon browbands are quite easy in principle, a bit harder to make them well :-) all you need is a browband and two types of ribbon :-)

That book looks great! I see there is 'make your own riding clothes' too! Amazing!

I have like 50 metres of twill type fabric, picture this: twill hacking jacket, matching numnah and browband... Show rug and travel boots... Why not some tendon boots too?

I did as a kid, my horse had a fab rug made from a hospital bed blanket edged with satin from a dressing gown, a turnout rug made from a bathroom blind and a numnah made from the sheepskin rug from my bedroom (I was grounded for that one...)

I had a book like this that was useful http://www.amazon.co.uk/Make-Your-O...&sr=8-1&keywords=make+your+own+horse+clothing

I have both the book mentioned above and this book amazon.co.uk/Make Your Own Horse Equipment

In English, strangely enough English lessons in Sweden didn't cover how to interpret English sewing instructions for neither Horse equipment nor clothing ( ;)  :) ), and it was before I had access to internet, but the books still did help me to sew a very basic dog rug to one of my now late bitches.

:)

Rope head collars.

Easy-peasy when you understand the instructions on the net for tieing the knots are all rubbish!:D (English and American are two separate languages!).

Yep I've just stared making numnahs & its pretty easy tbh! The main problem I've had is getting the binding not to pleat up, buy I think I've about Sussed it now! Ill try & post a photo.....

I'm so glad you said that. I thought I was being even more stupid than usual. I've been trying to make a rope headcollar for days but I CANNOT get the fiador (except I now call it something else starting with F) knot to come out right. Argh!! It's doing my head in!!!

Edited to say, just remembered, I've got a friend who makes these..

Not horsey related but this was my 1st attempt at a cosmetics bag yesterday, made from some of my daughters outgrown clothes!

I haven't made my own from scratch but I've had to alter a few if the fit was bad... tinap what's the secret with the binding? ! It drives me mad!

Thanks Tobiano! The first one was just for practice but the daughter loves it to bits! I get a bit anal about not perfectly straight stitches & things so I'm just trying to perfect those before I try & sell but everyone I've showed loves them! I've just picked up some fab kids character fabric to do some with too ;)

Thanks tinap! I will study ;)

I made a thermatex neck cover from an old rug, can kind of see it here. I do lots of alterations to my rugs and all my own mending :) very satisfying :)

Wow, thought it was just me who loved to sew! I've done a tartan saddle cloth for my hairy highland. Also made him a fly mask specially adapted to accommodate his huge forelock and frequently alter or repair things for myself and everyone else on the yard.

But my favourite sewing projects are saddle covers in all sorts of fleece, which I started when I couldn't find one which actually stayed on my old dressage saddle. Worked out my own pattern and now often make them to sell as well.

Ah yea I've made one of those before too, sent it with the saddle when I sold the pony though!

Since I've started up again, I've been surprised at the price of fabric though! When I first left school (mid 90's) you could get a metre of cotton for a couple of quid, now the nice patterns are anything from £5-12!! I've found some cheap ish sellers on ebay but I prefer to see & feel it before buying :(

Only thing I've made was a browband for a show pony class which actually turned out pretty good. 3 bit of ribbon wrapped round an old browband and rossette things at the ends. Was quite fun to make and of course you can make your own colour combo's - I had red, white and glittery silver.
