Sorry for not posting in the dog section but thought I may get a few more responses here!

We’re currently looking for a new friend for Archie and keen to get a bitch between 6 and 12 months so that she will adapt easier into a house with another dog, cat and a few adults.

We may be looking at a rough collie x who’s 6 months old and I just wondered what they’re like as a breed generally (don’t know what the cross is yet!)

There will be children in the house occasionally and one day we may even have our own but I wouldn’t let a child climb all over Archie who’s 110% let alone any other dog (I have been told collies can be a bit unpredictable around kids).

Exercise isn’t a problem and I think on average she’d get at least an hour and a half a day (long walks morning/evening) and lots of mental stimulation.

Just really appreciate some feedback on the breed really! We're in no rush to find our second dog - want to ensure she's right for us and vice versa!

Thanks in advance.

We had two when I was young. Both were rescues. One had to be rehomed after a few years (she'd been horrendously abused and my parents just couldn't cope with some of her behaviour. She used to jump 5 foot fencing and tip bins over all around the place because she thought she'd be starved etc). They tried really hard but eventually through the rescue found a local woman who had huge fencing and was retired so had all the time in the world to spend on Kelly.
Jessie stayed with us until the end. She used to sit by my pram for hours on end and no one was allowed near until my mum or dad told her it was ok. She'd play with my brother and his friends in the street and one day a lad attacked my brother, Jessie pulled the boy off by his pants :) she was so loyal and once people had been ok'd by my parents she was loving to them. She was amazing to have around.
One bad thing is Jessie malted for England :(

I'd definitely have one :)

I have a rough collie. He's a complete gem. Lovely natured chap. Never had much to do with children but when he does meet them he's very gentle. Great family dog :-)

I know quite a number of rough collie x gsd mixes. They all have their issues, but then again they're all rescue cases that have been handed about a bit! Smart dogs. LOVELY dogs when they're behaving ;)

If it wasn't for all the hair I'd have a rough collie in a flash. Never met one I didn't like!

We had 3 when i was young, fab dogs, lovely temps. Id have another if i could cope with the grooming! They do tend to get matted if not kept on top of.

Thanks guys.....the one were interested in doesn't have much of a coat yet as is only 6 months but who knows!

I have a rough collie. She's a bit nuts as she's old and senile but also very sweet and loves a cuddle. They're lovely dogs but do require substantial grooming.

Well I'm excited about hopefully meeting her! I have no doubt she has a long coat but being a cross and looking at pics of her at 6 months I'd expect it to be longer. ...I'm pretty sure she's border x rough....

Collies need a lot of exercise and a lot of mental stimulation, I wouldn't usually recommend them for anything but a working home (be it with animals, agility or something else). We have two collies. They are on the go for 16 hours a day and that just about keeps them occupied! Collies can be short tempered and sharp with people although ours are fairly docile and I've never met a nicer natured dog than the one, so it does vary with individual animals. :)

Are yours borders? Been told by quite a few peeps that they're not as chilled or good with kids as the rough coats?
