we're moving to our own yard in a few weeks and will have my 2 there to start with,we are also looking to adopt a happy hacker for mainly my OH to ride just 2 days a week.

Originally i was just going to go and buy him one but i've been thinking it would be nice to give a horse a home from a charity. We've had all the paperwork to fill in and i'm quite hopeful. The questions they've asked i wasn't daunted with as much i thought and i've got some good qualifications and references. I have great access to equine vets too as i work at a good equine practice so hopefully i meet all the requirements. Our new yard is fab and has amazing turnout options,we have stables that can be field shelters also, one is that big! They have free access to come inside or stay out 24/7 on their own accord,we have a orchard paddock that has lots of shelter and thick hedges great for hot summer........ so i think the yard is ok.

Sorry to go on,very excited!

Basically just wondered if anyone on here has/or has had a horse from a charity?

I know you have to be very strict with worming, shoeing, vacs etc but i've always been very on the ball with welfare as one should. My horses come first end of!

We did, he was 22 when we got him and came with a donkey companion. He was ridden for about 4 years before being retired - and living til 36!

They were always helpful on their annual checks, and didn't get shirty when he was underweight ish at the end of winter - he was old! I would say go for it, they are always looking for the right people, although you might have to put yourself on a waiting list for the right horse

Yep,at the moment they only have 13.2hh's or a 16.3hh and thats just the worst heights for us. We don't have a endless lists of wants but we do need it to be between 14.3hh and 16hh ideally.

We're going on the waiting list and then we will be invited to come see and try the one that they do get in. Not desp so we are willing to wait for the right one.

My horse is from HAPPA. They are no problem at all provided you stick to the dates for their vaccs, shoeing, teeth etc, nothing unusual there! Also you will probably need a home check when the right horse comes along. In my case it was to check the fencing, shelter in the field, stable available when necessary etc.

I think it's a very good idea. I would try looking at as many of the rescue centres you can - redwings, WHW, HAPPA, Horseworld, RSPCA (they mostly seem to have youngstock at the mo - there is a nice 4 yo 14.2hh piebald on there though!).

Hope you find what you're looking for!

I rehomed a horse from the Blue Cross centre at Burford; they were very good & I got a super horse from them, it was her 1 year anniversary on Saturday!
It depends on what you want but if you're not too fussey they'll get back to you quickly. I'm an experienced rider & said I'd take anything which wasn't dangerous & my horse is definately only suitable for a confident rider but she's perfect for me.
The best £350 I ever spent, I tell everybody she's a Blue Cross horse & they're always very impressed that I got such a beautiful looking horse from a rescue home.
Are you looking for a riding horse? On my first visit I did a riding assessment on a school master first before they would let me rider her, I then rode her in the school. I liked her so went back a few days later to hack her out. The home checker then came out about 10 days later, she gave me the go ahead so I collected her a couple of days later.
My horse wasn't a cruelty case she had belonged to the same person for 10 years but she had to give her up as she was in her 70s & couldn't cope with her any more, so she hasn't got any issues.
You get a folder with record sheets to keep track farrier visits, worming etc
Good luck it sounds like you have a good home waiting for a lucky horse.
