I am now light weight rugging during the day and bringing in at night. If I think I can get away with unrugged then I do but it does mean studying the weather forcast.
Put a lightweight rug on my event horse yesterday, I am competing a BE 90 at the weekend and want to keep him clean. He is out 24/7, none of my others have rugs on tho.
yep my tb x pony has a lightweight turnout on since last night over the top of a sweet itch rug cuz when that rug gets wet it takes ages to dry and poor pony ends up freezing
Yep. Have to admit, I have put a lightweight on for bout a week. She drops off really quickly and I don't know where everyone else is but we have a few 'cool' nights. It depends on the individual ponio.
my boy gets a thin fleece on in his stable at night and during the day gets a no fill turnout rug, just started this last week as noticed he's started getting slightly woolier
Stan had his first one this season tonight. 10C is my cut off for rugging.
Dolls is in a more sheltered field & warmer, so she has to rough it a bit longer.
The horses have lightweight rain sheets on if it looks like it's going to rain.
The ponies that we are planning to clip will be rugless until they are clipped and the pony who isn't being clipped but will still be in work will have a rug on from next week as we don't want him to grow a thick coat.
The yearling will be rugless for as long as possible as I want her to grow thick winter woolies!
I've had my older mare rugged up at night for sometime...her stable is in a barn with ventalation slats at side/back and she feels cold quickly shes arab x welsh, I've had a cooler on her then as the nights got cooler I've put lightweight stable rug on...trying not to rug too soon but on other hand don't want her to get a chill or drop weight, depending on weather during day I will put her l/w on...but it's off today it's 19degree and sunny even with a freshish wind but she seemed ok.
X
mine has his MW turnout rug on at night as well... but i don't want him to grow a winter coat as he's an absolute git to clip! It's supposed to be nicer this weekend and enxt week so he can have his LW back on if it keeps warmish!!
My TB has been rugged most of the year! Its her second try out 24/7 in summer and its gone a lot better than the first time. I have a dilemma that my other horse would never live in a stable if she could so I have tried to compromise. TB is now up to a medium weight at night and if raining a lightweight during the day. I dont usually have to clip her come winter but will see with this new arrangment
So does Crumpet! He gets cold and skinny and I've noticed the colder nights have caused him to drop off already! Poor Gertie is having to stay nekked because I can't work her to keep the weight off.
Ha ha, this morning I had to put on WINTER rugs onto two of mine!! BOTH were shivering like mad yesterday in the middle weights! But then we have had lashing rain the past 2 days and I mean torrential with loads of flooding.
mines been in its lightweight most of the "summer"! wearing a rug 24/7 unless v sunny - in at night all year round. Have to rug well to prevent big fur coat in winter to delay clipping! Hes v naughty and the later I can do it the better!!
Yup, my old gal (23) has had her lightweight Fal on overnight as it has been quite cool and windy. She can commute to her stable, but seems to choose not to do that - will stand out and then get cold! Irish blood.............!
