Horse in question is a 8 year old Connemara Gelding that is low mileage. We have recently moved yards and he is now on much better grazing/large fields and about 7weeks ago I have started putting back shoes on him for the first time in his life. Last Thursday he came in from the field with these swellings and they have only gone down very little since, I have bandaged the legs overnight and been cold hosing. There is no heat in these swellings, he is not lame and does mind me prodding it. The swelling feels quite soft and fluidy.

I am wondering if it could be a bit of concussion from the hard ground or possibly to much protein but then would the whole leg not be puffy? Has anyone experienced this? He is now on a 5 day bute trial and will be stabled for part of the day. If no improvement then I will call the vet out.

Why a bute trial if he is not lame and doesn't mind prodding. I don't understand what that will achieve. Yes there is some anti inflammatory in there but I would have said there are better methods to get swelling down. As others have said windgalls, is what they look like to me, i would have said the same from your post subject title alone.

Also how are you doing a bute trial without the vet having seen him.

Had same with my 4 year old. Coming in from field. Low mileage so couldnt be windgalls or concussion. Was worse in hinds. Vet dismissed my concerns at time. He was confirmed with insulin resistance a year later and had an acute laminitic attack. Hinds had slight rotation fronts not so affected. I am now careful with him. Had same puffy legs a few weeks ago. Since being reshod the swelling has not appeared. So not sure if it is related to too much grass (there is less now in his paddock as hes eaten most if it!), the reshoeing which has altered the blood circulation or he has been fighting a virus (was recently scoped and he has spots on his larynx so immune system under attack) which he could quite easily have been doing as a 4 yr old? Dont know if this helps in any way. If it is too much sugar in the new fields as long as you keep the exercise up every day in some form and soak hay for when hes in you should keep on top of it. See what happens after reshoeing too. Let me know how you get on!
