Not read all the previous posts but I tried it twice a long time ago. Hated it both times but the second time they actually caught a fox and I will never forget it's screams as the hounds ripped into it (don't think they are actually supposed to do that!). That finished me off totally.
Other than that my main reasons for not liking it were that I never felt safe. I had a very flightly horse at the time and once the rest of them set of it was really difficult to stop my horse. We had a bit of a struggle to go at what I thought was a reasonable pace all the way round. Add to that people were flying over hedges etc without any knowledge of what was on the other side at all and I just thought I was an accident waiting to happen. My sister on the other hand absolutely loved every minute of it, as did my dad who used to ride with us.
I'd love to go drag hunting (fluffy bunny and proud!!) but I don't want to go alone and no one else on the yard does drag hunting.
Ned has hunted quite a few times and apparently he's absolutely crazy
I'm not sure if I'd like it or not. I do love a good blast, but I also like being in a smaller group. I'd like to do it at least once!
Drag hunting ,in general, involves much faster straighter runs with more jumps - think steeplechasing! Which is why I ve left that to my OH .
Loved hunting though , and sadly since mid 90s havent had a perfect hunter to take.
There are lots of the old guard still in hunting , where your accent [ or a ginormous bank balance]will dictate whether you will be welcomed by them, but I ve found theres lots of friendly people too. Unfortunately the old guard like to think they run the show , so its easy to be put off by them .I find hanging around at the back is the friendliest place to be!
It is a bit scary, and I think the best part is when you re home at the end of the day, thawed out , glass in hand , and remembering that you survived!!
I have never been hunting but I would like to have a go. I know a few people who have been and we are planning to go this autumn with the local hunt (Vale of Lune) who I've heard good reports about.
I probably wont do the jumps the first time I go, and just go around with the "non-jumping" group to get a feel for it and if I decide to go again and jump I might borrow a friends horse or hire a school master type to do it (my mare is unpredictable jumping and my youngster is no way ready for that yet - maybe next year for him).
Think I will be drinking a few before I go though!!!
