Abortion as in the injection to stop the dog from staying pregnant?or the full spay while pregnant?
Overall I would say no more than a normal injection.Though like all drugs there can be occasional side effects.
In a spay if early on then no more than a normal spay is the answer.
In a late term spay it is a more complicated operation for the surgeon and there are higher risks to the procedure. But it would be similar to a cesarian section in terms of trauma to the bitch.
Physically no more then any other operation such as neutering. (I've worked with dogs in a rescue and many are in unknowingly in pup when they are booked in to be neutered. By the time they are under anesthetic and opened up it is too late to save them. So in effect they are aborted ie. removed when they are neutering)
Mentally...definately not! I actually think having puppies and weaning can be more stressful to the bitch then aborting them.
I assume you mean mentally?, if so then as the poster above I have whitnesed many (rescue) and work wise and I have never seen any ill effect on the bitch.
No, in fact I just took a stray to the vet yesterday for a spay. She was about 4 weeks a long. Got a call from the vet today, surgery went just fine. It does take more time so the vet charges more. However, much better than having a litter of mixed breed pups and having to find suitable homes for all of them. We live in the country and the local shelter only takes in animals from within the city limits. If you live out of the city limits, it's $60/anmal to leave them at the shelter so people just dump them off in the country. I hate cleaning up other peoples messes with my hard earned money.
