I don't know about tougher, definitely gobbier.
The real I work horses for a living folk IMO are far more outspoken and don't care what they say than those who work in a company and have to be diplomatic and considered of others. Sometimes I think some horse women are so used to dealing with animals they forget how to deal with people and the complexities we bring.
As for toughness I guess anyone working with large animals on a daily basis has to get used to a certain crisis management in that if something happens you just get on with it without considering the damage to your manicure etc etc. Just being out in all weather elements brings a certain toughness I guess.
