Are people too busy to be courteous?

Unfortunately she’s adamant she’s staying in West Yorkshire 😞. I keep sending her positions at showjumping yards I’m Europe but she’s not interested..

If she’s keen to get a relevant job I would strongly advise her to be flexible with location. I’m sure West Yorkshire is a horsey area, but even so there can’t be that many positions needing to be filled?

One of the realities of entry level job search is that something usually has to give, in this case , I would be raising the issue of location OR job type if you really want to get a start. I absolutely endorse following a dream but blimey, it’s unusual for all the planets to align at this point and give the right job, conditions, hours and location at this point in working life ( if ever!)

I haven’t lived in the UK for many years, my daughter however has insisted on living in 'Gods Own Country' of West Yorkshire where she loves the people and the countryside.

After completing her level 3 in equine management she now settled in Holmfirth and looking for employment.

I cannot believe the number of positions she’s applied for where she’s just not heard anything back.. A well renowned veterinary practice, a long established feed producer and a popular kennels to name just 3!

She had a job and livery lined up for after college but, with just a month to go, the person found someone else. She was in touch with a yard and arranged to visit, turned up and the yard owner had forgotten she was coming, can she come back another day! Another yard ghosted her all summer after offering her weekend work. She went for a trial at a yard and after 7hrs work it was mutually decided she didn’t fit and they paid her just £40, way below minimum wage.

She applied for a yard close by, got shortlist and then did a trial day. Since then she’s heard nothing! I get that they obviously found someone else but to just not contact her..

I know it’s a difficult time for our young kids and especially in this industry but these experiences are denting her confidence.

Can anyone offer advice on what she should do please? She’s reluctant to sign on, if that’s what it’s called these days!

This has been going on for a while, but I think some employers are worse than others. My daughter left uni in 2009 and went for several interviews that involved presentations, so they needed prep before. She would come home thinking she had a chance of the job, and never hear anything again, not even a no thank you.
If they have a HR department they will often phone, many don't, and it makes you wonder if you really want to work for them if you were offered the job.
My daughter ended up going self employed doing fill in work.

I would suggest horsey FB groups, I live near Newmarket so studs and yards often advertise on there, but also this time of year there are more people needing winter staff. Think about freelance even if its for a short while, she will learn who is good to work for and get contacts.

Slightly off job topic… but buying horses has the same levels of manners.

I went to look at one a couple of years ago. Told the seller thank you for your time, I will get back to you over the next couple of days.

Two days after viewing I said I’d like to purchase horses, subject to him passing a strangles test. Contacted a couple of vets in the area, found one that would be able to get out fairly soon.

In the meantime horse had been sold and taken to new home. Now whilst I don’t blame the seller for going elsewhere, as presumably they didn’t get a strangles test, and took the horse after viewing, the seller should have at least told me he had sold. Not left it until I told them when the vet would be there to do the strangles test.

Yes that's true, there do seem to be regular requests from trekking centres in Iceland for seasonal staff. A couple of seasons of that and you would definitely have plenty of experience!

I completely understand that she'd like to stay where she is but decent horsey jobs are so hard to get, she might need to change her mindset and set aside a couple of years to take a completely different approach. Then with some experience, it'll be easier to find good work in the area she really wants to be in.
Id love her to do something like this.. we have a horse which is currently with her in UK so he’d have to come to me in Austria, which would be great for me too!! ☺️

Has she searched top riders in the area across all disciplines? She needs to phone them and see if anything going. Some riders have lost staff recently as they've gone to uni after a gap year.
She has sent messages to yards within the area. Keeps her eye on social media for adverts. A lot don’t bother to respond 😞. Phoning may be a problem as she’s rather shy.. until she gets to know you..!

Annoying 😡

I agree, she’d rather change job type than move. 🙈

Of course i agree. She’s started to widen her search, my original post was about the lack of response from potential employers. She recently applied to yet another vets in the area, so far no response!
