Are some of the "extras" you do just because others eyes are on you?

Which colour?

I don't think my standards have been any different between being on livery yards with other clients, and when I had a small yard with just my own horses. The only difference at the moment is that several other owners in the barn (it is all DIY) have the most perfect shavings beds, you would think somebody had used a spirit level on them and we all have a bit of a running joke as to who can achieve the most perfect bed each day...

I haven't won yet - but it is only a matter of time....

lol i have been asked if i use a spirit level and ruler on my bed. I enjoy making it look nice even if ponio is going in the stable only 10 mins later and then she pulls down the side banks and manages to wee right in the back banks

Do they ride your horse as part of full livery? My horses never got tacked up on full livery, some of the staff didnt muck out properly, so did it myself quite often but this yard is one of the most rediculously busy yards you might find, they have to fit the full liveries around all of the lessons as it is a riding school too and half the staff(not suprisingly) dont last very long. My horse is now on D.I.Y so do it all.

Who me? Well, honestly I have FL because that's all that's available, but I rather like spending time with PF and A on the ground so I do most things myself. I'm considered rather eccentric for it. If I asked they would lunge, but not ride (not that I'd let them!) They should rug up, unrug, etc, but they're mostly too idle if not to busy...
So basically I pay FL (which really isn't all that much as I work for the YO part time) but have DIY.

So, having been on a yard and now having them at home, I must say that I most certainly do not do most of the things i did on a yard.
I absolutely do not give a sh*t what other people think anymore, my horses are happy and settled here at home and have the best routine ever, governed by me and no one else. Therefore the stupid pathetic things I did on a yard have gone by the by.
I don't give them fluffy white beds, they are clean and sensible.
I don't brush them within an inch of their lives, even though i'm not riding, i give them a check over and let the bed do the rest.

Yep i meant you. I thought they might ride her because you said you tack up yourself in your 1st post so i thought maybe your full livery exercises them for you, some do not mine though lol I was up early this morning, ignore me being all confussled.

lol i like mucking out as long as it is my own horse and i only have to do her. It means i can be on 'go slow' mode. HATE straw beds with a passion, if my horse was on straw she wouldn't be on D.I.Y

Tia has said everything I was going to.

Apart from the number of horses involved of course.

I don't clean tack because I don't need to, apart from it being synthetic anyway.
I also don't keep horses in so mucking out, as I knew it, has gone out the window, deep joy!

At DIY I went my own sweet way and never did anything extra because others could see me, I couldn't have cared anyhow as long as my horses were OK. I can't imagine that people ever took any notice of me anyway, other than to bitch, but that's the way of the world and goes with the livery territory.

I moved from assisted DIY livery to renting my own field in April. When at yard the YO kept all her horses spotless so felt like I had to make more of an effort with mine and ponies looked better for it.

Now I'm on my own the pony I ride gets brushed everytime he is ridden but doesn't get bathed as often as I don't have the facilities. His mane and tail could do with pulling but he doesn't look too bad. The shetlands probably get groomed more often - they were companions to youngsters at yard and I used to take my life in my hands sometimes if I wanted to take shets out of the paddock

I would say that my standards had slightly dropped but ponies are happier out 24hrs.

Tack-wise my standards have completely dropped - used to clean it once a week, now I can't remember the last time I did it

However, ponies have just been freezemarked so can't ride for a few days so will force myself to clean my tack

Having been in both enviroments I would say a bit of both.

In a livery yard you can be washed along with everybody and pick up what others do the same as others picking up on what you do. So long as it isn't done for the wrong reasons then that is pretty cool.

At home you can do things that perhaps can't happen in a Livery Yard due to YO's rules, other liveries horses, field space, facilities etc.

My boy is on full livery and due to health problems (mine, not his) I don't get to visit as often as I would like (understatement!).

I am very lucky that he's at a wonderful stud/training yard where they really do treat him as though he were their own most precious horse - the attention to detail is phenomenal, much better than I could ever manage myself.

Oh and they stand him at stud for me as well.

The thought of putting DIRTY TACK on a horse makes me cringe

You mean you are NOT supposed to wear the same socks for 6 mos?!

what about knickers?

Knickers are okay for roughly 5 and a half months then the build up of the various gases due to fermentation can make things a tad uncomfortable when somone lights up next to you.
