Are some of the "extras" you do just because others eyes are on you?

Which colour?

I am wondering if your horse/s were home as VS at a livery yard where others come and go would you care for them exactly the same? I wonder how many people do all of the *extras* and things for/to their horses that they truly do not think they have to just because they are concerned about being criticized by the other liveries?

Maybe you do it out of competition or because you do not want ridicule or you want to have others feel you do not neglect your horse? Let's face it, what is needed and pertinant to some may not be to others. We all have differing values of horse care and many things are over the top and pampering just for us imo while others feel a horse is neglected without it.

If you had your horse at home would it be the same or are you willing to admit that you do some things because there are many eyes on you and feel you have to? I am NOT saying not caring for your horse properly...I am just talking about the extra things that may not matter in the scheme of things to a horses health and well being

My response is BOTH

Having been at livery yards and having them at home I think I have swayed both ways.

I relaxed some things that Were silly to me. I give my own shots now and do not give half of the past vaccines. I would have been ridiculed for this before.

I DO spend more time with my horses now though and think they are getting better care because I am here all the time with them. They are also getting fed much better becasue I am in charge of it.

My two are not kept at a Livery yard but are the equivalent of being at home, with no prying eyes, however I believe that I do every thing I would do, even if prying eyes were on me

However I will freely admit that the Tack Cleaning is non existent ..... so 'maybe' that would be improved if I was on a yard

I am on a livery yard and I think I would be the same at home, I don't care what others think. If someone comments I simply say "my horse my rules" !!!! Eaglestone I am on livery and my tack cleaning habits are non existant much to other liveries disgust, and I happily send mine out with no rug on despite everyone else wrapping theres up!

Maybe, I don't know, I haven't been on a yard in years. That might be why I haven't groomed my horse for 6 months or brushed her tail since May 07.

I have never had a horse on livery (well only once for a very brief spell) so have been lucky to either have them at home or have my own yard.

I can't actually think of anything I would do differently. - Nope nothing! (you will have to give me some clues!!)

We are seen out at shows, RC, PC and hunting so I do keep them fairly well turned out, I keep my tack in good order (too expensive not too!) and keep my yard tidy.

Actually thinking about it I would hate to be on a livery yard, I wouldn't be able to stand it if someone hadn't swept the yard or forked up the muckheap!!

LMAO! I love this response!

I'm half and half - my horses are perfectly well looked after, with everything they need *however* sometimes life does get in the way and things are done in a rush rather than to perfection and I have also developed a rather lazy habit of not changing my turnout rugs at night in winter

I go to yard shows, we have 3/4 a year.

Nothing to do with eyes being upon me; more to do with the fact I own something like 23 horses now whereas before I only owned 3. No way do I do as much with the horses each individually as I previously did when I only had the 3.

Having said that, I don't have to; over here all of my horses live out 24/7 whereas in England they were stabled overnight.

Over here I own a working farm so it doesn't have to be as smart as the lovely livery stables I owned in England. I also pleasure ride these days so don't have to keep my tack cleaned and shining all the time. I also ride western for the most part here and you aren't supposed to clean western tack much thankfully.

I get laughed at by the others on my livery yard for the silly things I do above and beyond 'basic care' - I still do them.
tongue.gif
For example, my horse doesn't have tack put on until she's spotlessly bodybrushed, I wipe my boots clean before mounting, hooves are scrubbed clean and hoof salve applied most times that she's ridden. It's all just things I've been taught to do by my ex-PC mum and it feels wrong to me not to do it!

I get plenty of stick for it - 'Haven't cleaned her hooves today, what a mess' etc. but at the end of the day I have the best kept horse on that yard and I wouldn't have it any other way. So there.

When i used to be on an old yard, i was constantly watched by YO if something was not done how she would want it done then she went lou lou, have since moved and now im alot more relaxed, and do all the same things, but at my own speed and to my liking.

I dont clean tack, unless for a show, franticly scraping grease of the night before and oiling is what i do best

I only really clean my tack when I'm bored, so mainly in the holidays as during college time I just come up the yard to ride and go. I doubt I would change much if I kept Henry at home, although saying that I would probably pick his hooves out less
blush.gif
as I am quite lazy about it, mainly doing them before rides but not after.

Mine are at livery, but as they mine live out 24/7, and my friend and I do ours between us, nobody even really knows what we do with them.
grin.gif

To be honest, the yard, although large, is generally quite peaceful; I don't have much to do with the other liveries, although they are all friendly, and helpful if I needed them. And my friend and I are always willing to do other liveries' horses for them if asked.
So nothing would change, if they were at home...except the living room might look a bit crowded

Other way round for me - mine are on a very small yard and I am a bad influence!

Other liveries used to clean tack every day, groom whole horse before every ride (not just the bits where the tack goes) and brush tails regularly. They have come round to my way of thinking now!

I would care for my horses exactly the same way at home - they are well looked after - just don't tend to get the 'extras' very often!

I was guilty as charged for that misdemeanour last winter

My horse gets all the extras, he means the world to me and I don't have kids etc so have more time to spend doing all the little things. But sometimes I am busy at work or uni and don't get to the yard until after 8pm after turning out early in the morning so I simply don't have as much time as I'd like to do everything. But I make sure that the time I do spend with him is beneficial and he knows he's No.1 when I'm there.
I'm at a livery yard and as I'm new people are looking at me a bit, that doesn't change how I look after him or how often I clean my tack (every week), I'm more likely to worry about him being naughty and showing me up!

I have done livery on a middle sized yard and now back at original yard where there are just two others who are rarely there when I am

I do nothing different at all.....

I went to stay with Ravenwood two weeks ago and her yard is indeed very tidy
smile.gif
smile.gif
But admit that it was a period in my life where I hardly groomed before riding..... mainly down to the fact that the horses were wet all week, so not much could be achived anyway!!!

Oh, and I still havent cleaned the remains of Exmoor off of my saddle!!!!

Oh good I am glad its not just me!
Ours get sand knocked off with a wisp made of an old carrot bag, and their tails only get brushed when they get bathed and that is not this year yet!

(and the grooms are ridiculously busy and also a bit crap)

Do they ride your horse as part of full livery? My horses never got tacked up on full livery, some of the staff didnt muck out properly, so did it myself quite often but this yard is one of the most rediculously busy yards you might find, they have to fit the full liveries around all of the lessons as it is a riding school too and half the staff(not suprisingly) dont last very long. My horse is now on D.I.Y so do it all.

Oh they can tack up ok, they're just rubbish at mucking out!! And I like tacking up because then I always notice if something is broken/wearing thin. The other day A overreached (luckily it was nothing) but I noticed blood on his white tendon boots. I'm 100% sure the grooms wouldn't have noticed/commented and injury would've gone uncleaned.
