We are looking for our first horse, find it abit scary looking in the for sale ads as we wonder why people are selling what they claim to be good bomb proof horses?? we live in Wiltshire and I have see in other counties schools that help you to find a horse that is suitable, any in Wiltshire??

People sell for many reasons, personal circumstances change also a 'bombproof' horse maybe suitable for a person at one point but then they move beyond it, so don't be put off just because it is for sale. Do you have an instructor or a riding school you have previously been to and gotten on well with the instructors, I would try and take one of these along with you or a very knowledgeable friend to help give an outside opinion etc. Yes there are genuine sellers out there, and good horses, but it seems you have to sift through a lot of crap to get there!

No help really just to wish you good luck on your search!!! I'm dreading the task I have next year of selling the daughters pony then finding her a horse. Not looking forward to it at all!!! xx

Similar position, trying to find daughter a new pony. Have met some lovely people but had no luck so far. I have an extensive list of question I ask when calling but have found when we turn up to view they have omitted to tell us something! Worst one was the lady who said "snaffle mouth for everything" but after travelling an hour and a half we discovered the pony was in a bitless bridle :(

I have taken to viewing first time on our own then if we think it might be 'the one' arranging a second viewing with our instructor. Saves wasting our instructors time.

Good luck and I hope you find your perfect partner :)

I hack at a lovely school, when i last sat down with the staff for a coffee they all told about the hidden meanings on the for sale list!! put me off abit, just found one on here which would be perfect and its a teenager moving on to uni.

Thats a good idea, hubby pretty confident so anything we miss, might ask someone at school to come for a second viewing, thanks

There are - my best friend is selling her mare as she has had a baby and simply can't afford horse anymore, she's been on loan to another friend for a year but that was never meant to be permanent and so mare now for sale.
Just have to keep looking I guess!

Don't be put off going to a dealer. They get a bad press but most are very helpful and willing to take the horse back and exchange if you aren't happy with it. Sure they are in it to make money but to stay in business they have to have happy customers. Have known private sellers who have been ecomomical with the truth or claim that the horse never presented a vice, etc, when they had them. And before everyone jumps on me, I'm not saying there are no honest private sellers out there!! But I always seemed to find the few that weren't :(

Hi _ i cant actually help you but yes there are good sellers out there. and sellers that worry about the home they may be selling to. I was a seller once - and it was probably more scary than buying and i hope i never have to sell again. I classically bought the wrong horse for me - he was a beautiful coloured IDXTB. i was a tad overhorsed! sounds a bit corny when you tell perspective buyers over the phone that the horse is perfect in every way but the rider wasnt but in my case it was true. He eventually was sold to a wonderful woman from England who has brought him on and now doing low level eventing. So - all i can advise you is keep looking on sites such as horsemart, freeads ect and go and view lots but most importantly take along someone with knowledge and experience that you trust. good luck.

To be honest Im more nervous about saying the wrong thing, Ive worked with lovely dressage horses, a confident hacker and even did my first dressage test acouple of months ago, but because ive never owned one Im worried Im not going to say the correct 'Horsey' thing to the owner. We are looking for a good livery at the moment with possible part DIY to help with the unknown!!

Hi
I'm in the same position as you...looking for my first and so far (one month on) the biggest problem has been finding anything to go and look at! Only managed two so far as they all seem to be in Kent or Yorkshire and not down here anywhere near Hampshire.

Advice is really what others have already mentioned. It is akward when you don't know many horsey people and those you do, are busy instructors. Definately don't bother your ri for every visit, save up their good will for second visits I think is the way to go.
So far both viewings have been easy and people helpful and decent, just not the right horse.

Ditto the dealer comment, some have excellent rep's and you do get some (at least theoretical) comeback.
Good luck
at least you know you're not alone!!!

there are but it is a mind field out there by the sounds of it
i will be selling soon and will be 100% honest as the horse has already been past about a bit through no fault of his own and i want to find the right person for him that will keep him for life and really get on with him as he is lovely and deserves the best chance i can find for him :)

(i can't afford to keep two ,he is a project intended to sell but he is just lovely :o so he'll be here a while ) i wouldn't describe him as quite bomb proof though so no good for you ;)

good luck and take your time don't be in a hurry to just buy something for the sake of it

Ditto that there are many good dealers out there, you just have to sift through the dodgy ones.

I'm currently selling on behalf of my stepmum and I would like to think of myself as being a genuine seller. He's only going because she doesn't have the time for him.

The last one I sold was a just backed pony I told several people he wasn't suitable for a childs first pony. Until a right family came a long and I was clear about his eperience and health. He was for sale as he was only bought as a companion pony and was too small for me to ride.

I am currently selling my horse as I bought her to compete, have had her since a foal, she is now 9 and I've hardly taken her out. Between weather, broken horses and broke horse boxes and OHs job, we've hardly been out.

She is very well behaved hacking which I find boring when thats all we do. OH is back in Afgan next year so that rules taking her anywhere next year as well. I want what is best for her, so want to make sure she goes to a suiteable owner.

Yes there are! Don't be put off by cliches in sale ads - some people will lie, but plenty of people have very genuine reasons for selling.

Just ask as many questions as possible to try and sift the genuine from the phoneys!

Biggest thing I found, always ask for a video unless its under 30 mins away! Especially a dated one so you know its not from years ago as was the case with one I went to see, video showed a stunning athletic sports horse, real life was a broadmare still feeding with complete lameness. GRR.

Giddyupem2 and Runaground, what sort of horse are you looking for, what is your budget and how far will you travel?

Would prefer a Gelding, Im 5'8 so about 16h plus, dont want too much of a youngster so about 8 or 9, wouldnt mind doing abit of dressage and small hunter trials (hubby said once I get going he wont see me at weekends!!) so something to show me the way abit!! but want a gent and something that wont mind 2 kids and a dog around the yard. Am I asking too much dont want to be the next Mary King but want something abit more that a happy hacker!?

I look upto 2500, I can hear you all laughing but they are around, finding a yard isnt an easy one either. x

Faracat I'm after pretty much the same as Giddyupem2 confidence giving allrounder not a plod as I've had shares, good in wide open spaces alone or in co' with brakes, genuine jumping small courses, doesn't get silly out and about also pref' geld and 16h to 16.3h to fit into normal trailer. 8yrs to 13. Ho hum I'm sure someone out there right now is riding my boy......hand him over....now!!

Giddyupem2 I can sympathise about livery. I'm in next door hants and it took months of detective work to find a place. Not having a horse means you don't get hear about all the good places because you're not yet in the "in crowd" as it were.
I found lots of trawling old ads online, (NFED is good but may not cover your patch quite) and asking at tack and feed places turned up a few, as just looking doesn't work. If a yard has no vacancies it may not have any web presence or any listing anywhere...there are quite a few which seem to want to be kept secret...I suppose because they are so popular they don't need to bother. In the end I got lucky and called in to a very popular yard on the offchance that I could join the waiting list and found due to a reshuffle there was a new space....So now of course I'm paranoid about losing it before I find neddy!!

Keep looking for yards I found a fab one finally. Try searching old posts on here. If you pass a rider on the road stop and ask them I did and heard of another "secret place".

PS. forgot to say I'm looking up to 3k give or take tack and giddyupem2 I'm not laughing as I've seen ads that meet our requirements and budget just nowhere near enough to expect even the sweetest r.i. to come out to get an expert opinion. Thats the only thing stopping me at the mo' the travelling expert thing...any suggestions..??

I have him!!!!
He won his first showjump class and won his first one day event, hunts like a dream has great brakes( even my mother had galloped him )and is a dude.
Unfortunately because he is so cool we want a little more for him than you'd want to pay :(

Dont want to sound patronising but what you are looking for are like hens teeth, and these type of saints are at a premium and still hold their value, I would think of uping your budget considerably. I buy the odd horse to sell on, if you find one of these saints for 2.5k let me know, I cant find any!!!
As for dealers in your area if you had a bigger budget I would say try www.shanewalshequestrian he brings horses over from Ireland, he has one on Horse quest at the moment fits your description perfectly but its £4850. Have a look it may give you more of an idea what you need to spend. Its on HorseQuest in the hunters section it dark bay and its called Dream, if its, as good as its description its worth its weight in gold, his ads are usually preety acurate. Good Luck.

Who wouldnt love thousands of pounds to spend on horses, Im patient

I'm dreading beginning this process after my wedding next month as we've finally got a property with land and stables and it seems like the right time to buy my first horse. I've ridden my whole life and had my own pony when I was younger but when it comes down to buying your first horse (with your money) it seems impossible to find what you're looking for. I hate going to view animals be it dogs, horses or whatever as you never know what you'll find when you get there.

Wish me luck as I too don't have a massive budget.

Dont up your budget, I was after exactly the same things as you both and I found mine for £2300 :) Granted he overreaches but if your not planning on being Mary King this is hardly the end of the world :D some soecial shoes from the farrier and he is on his way to perfection! Put up wanted ad's on equineadverts, freeads, friday ad etc etc and you will be inundated with people selling. Be patient, you will find mr perfect :)

I have a female version of what you want within budget she is safe and sane
