Are there any Genuine sellers?!!?

Having bought my first horse in January last year, I can totally empathize . . . it's incredibly daunting, but you have had good advice on here.

I would only add one thing - and that is be prepared to travel. Like you, I live in the South (was Hampshire, now Berkshire) . . . we found Kali in Hereford and he was well worth the drive.

P

Both the two looking for first horses - my friend's one would fit bill but she is also a little more money - she is advertised for £4000 but for an amazing home would probably sell for less. Pm me your email addresses if you want her ad as we are just round m25 from you guys 10 mins j16 M25.

Oh and she is a mare but you'd never know it she is a sweetheart. Totally safe around kids etc as girl who has been riding her this year has an 18 month old now so is well accustomed to prams and toddlers!

There are plenty genuine sellers out there, some times the buyers can be just as frustrating, I spent 10 months trying to sell a mare that was just backed, I was messed around something shocking and refused selling her to a few that came to sat on her, it quite frightened me watching how they handled her, she was steady and very soft mouthed and all I could think of, was that they would possibly ruin her.
I am still trying to sell her yearling that is a total gem and have been messed around even by a lady desperate to buy him crying down the phone asking me not to sell him to anyone else and then never hearing from her again.
So it is very scary both sides of the fence, I have alway kept in contact with the buyers of anything I sell, even one that lives in France, and if I find that they cannot keep the horse any longer then I have first refusal to buy back. I believe that it should be like this as a responsible part-time/hobby breeder to take resposability for what you bring into this world. There is a lot of thought in anything that I produce even AI which isnt cheap, and choosing the right stallions in europe. So I am really picky on where they go, just like some dog breeders out there.
Good luck in your search.

Just to let you know giddyupem2 I've just managed to see another one and although not right for me as he's too backward, the experience was fine. Staight forward easygoing people and not at all as daunting as I'd also been expecting. So good luck with your first viewings, my three have been tons easier than expected.

Those who suggest travelling........... yep think that's what I'll be doing.......I fancy a holiday in Yorkshire, never been!

Hi _ i cant actually help you but yes there are good sellers out there. and sellers that worry about the home they may be selling to. I was a seller once - and it was probably more scary than buying and i hope i never have to sell again. I classically bought the wrong horse for me - he was a beautiful coloured IDXTB. i was a tad overhorsed! sounds a bit corny when you tell perspective buyers over the phone that the horse is perfect in every way but the rider wasnt but in my case it was true. He eventually was sold to a wonderful woman from England who has brought him on and now doing low level eventing. So - all i can advise you is keep looking on sites such as horsemart, freeads ect and go and view lots but most importantly take along someone with knowledge and experience that you trust. good luck.

You sound exactly like one of the sellers I met when I was looking. On the phone she said "I wanted a family saloon but accidentally bought a sports car!". She was very honest, said she wouldn't ride him as he frightened her as he was so sharp but not naughty. And he was sharp but a lovely horse and the only reasons I didn't buy him was because of a conformational issue I wasn't happy with and a comment on the vets report from when she bought him.

I was lucky and all 3 sellers I had dealings with were really honest on the phone and the horses were everything they said they were. I became facebook friends with one seller even though I didn't buy her horse and am in contact wit the previous owners of the horse I eventually bought. There are nice sellers out there.

That said, I wasn't looking for "perfect". If my boy had been 100% in all ways I would never have been able to afford him but I just needed to know what the issues were so I knew whether I could deal with them. Friends who have been looking for "100% in every way" horses have had very different experiences to mine.

jj1966 you make a vaild point and something I'm worried now I'm having to sell one of my boys as I bought him to loan to a friend so she had time to gather the money together, she hasn't and I'm now daunted at having to sell him to a stranger, he a complete sweetie heart but I am in the NE where there seems to a million and one other horses for sale at the mo. :(

Shame OP isn't nearer as he would probably be a good match for her! I bought both my boys from a lovely dealer in N Yorks who is now helping me to sell him ironically enough (still to far for the OP?)

To be honest Im more nervous about saying the wrong thing, Ive worked with lovely dressage horses, a confident hacker and even did my first dressage test acouple of months ago, but because ive never owned one Im worried Im not going to say the correct 'Horsey' thing to the owner. We are looking for a good livery at the moment with possible part DIY to help with the unknown!!

I can understand this. The seller of my horse trotted him up and turned him in tight circles and asked what I thought. I'm not all that good at picking up on subtle lameness or knowing how tight they should be able to turn without falling over so I just smiled and nodded and muttered something about not liking his feet as they looked a bit long to me but the owner looked at me blank. I felt vindicated when the first thing the vet said at the vetting was that his feet needed doing.

Around here you'd be looking at £4-6k for the spec given, yes there are the odd cheaper ones but I would question the conformation and long term soundness of them. If you are prepared to go smaller or older then you might find something in your budget.

For example at the bottom end of my budget and I bet he'll go in a moment, but meets your spec exactly!

I completely agree.

We're looking at the mo.

Criteria is:
15.2-16hh (may stretch to 16.1 if compact) MW type. (I'm a right shorty, but mother is a reasonably leggy 5'8")

Aged 6-12, but ideally 8-10.

Must be 100% in all respects. We want a fun and sensible horse, so no quirks or tantrums or vices.

Must be forward going but not pull (as I have such an injured & weak neck). The same goes for being well mannered on the ground.

Must be 100% to hack alone. Good to clip, box, shoe etc etc. Must be good in traffic (incl. farm traffic).

Happy to live out a lot, but won't kick off if stabled.

Need not be a world beater, but someone keen to please and able to do lower level eventing, and RC ODEs/adult camp/beach rides/long hacks. I'll confess we'd like something good looking and well put together.

So something fun and safe, to join our family. Although I am a mare fan we don't mind a gelding, so long as he can be turned out with mares without fuss.

Oh and no full TBs, or cobs, or spotties.

We're not first time owners - I just lost my beloved mare who'd been with us for 14+ years, but need one that it safe and fun as I've had a serious injury in the past and hardly ridden for the last two/three years.

Our budget was £4-£4.4K, but I think we are going to raise that a little bit more. We also didn't want to drive for miles, but yet are planning on doing so next week as we've seen one we like, so *fingers crossed*

I'm afraid I'd be very skeptical that a £2K horse had something wrong with it. :o I tend to put £3.5K as my minimum in search engines at the mo :o

Yes is the answer to that.

My friend is selling her because he really is just too much!!
He always been a handfull butnow hes just getting worse to the point she wont get on him and when you can actually get in the saddle hes fine for abit then just throw you of.
Hes not in pain hes just plain naughty!! This has started in say the last 3 weeks.

She has been 100% honest with his advert and anyone who has called and i really respect her for that. There's too many people who would drug them up to sell on and potentially seriously hurt someone.

But i do know what you mean you can never be sure these days.

Just too be cheeky if anyone knows of someone looking fo a project horse inbox me :o

Just out of interest then: is £2,500 way off the mark (even in the current market) for a 14.3-16.0hh who would be used for hacking and general flatwork. I'm not fussed on colour, age or sex, just want a happy healthy and non-dangerous horse (who isn't a total plod).

I'm in North Wales on the Shropshire/Cheshire border and not looking until late October onwards.

Have a look at Horsequest, i found quite a few on there in the under 3000 section, also put horse rehoming in google!!
