Have just spent evening at the vets with pup, and wondered if anyone had heard of these symptoms before??
Yellowy muscusy poos (which have been on and off all week), agression (bit OH in the week)
and these which were a sudden onset. I'd left him for just an hour, came home and found him like this:
Nose bleeding, bleeding in the mouth, a 'gagging' noise, listless, laying down, twitching, heart racing, bloodshot eyes, unable to walk, untempted by variety of treats, very sleepy.
Upon arrival at vets we found: black stools, severe bruising and swelling around the throat.

Vet has run tests and we have to go back, but I was so upset i couldnt really take much in. He's home with us (had an anti b injection- just in case, and is on 'rest') and still not walking, still very sleepy. Vet mentioned a few things, his platelets are low, could possibly be a tick infection? or some kind of worm?? parvo? (though thats quite serious and I expect they'd have kept him in if they were that concerned).

any ideas??

Sounds like very little treatment :S The black stools are an indication I think of gi bleeding (black due to blood).
Sounds like there is either a blockage/ inflammation in the gut/intestines, I would be very unimpressed with vet for not doing more tests-eg. x-ray at the very least!!
Wonder if he has an object stuck in his throat perhaps? Or been bitten ?
Poor pup

sounds very ill

I'm not overly impressed about it

. He's alert, but just lethargic now, so I'll be spending the night worrying...

ETA his nose has started bleeding again

Charlie, is he up to date with his jabs? If so, parvo should be ruled out - but that really is the most hideous disease.

Have the vets thought about poisoning? Particularly rat poisoning?

Poor little chap sounds to be in an awful way

I agree with above about taking him to another vets.

Fingers crossed for him

She did a blood test to check for clotting for rat poison, and said that was fine. His nose seems to be bleeding on and off (he's just fallen asleep next to me and nose is now dry), vet said if he didnt improve by tomorrow to take him back, if he worsened to call her. In himself, he;s better, he;s alert and eting and drinking just very tired. I've always had problems getting him to eat, he;s so fussy, so i'm wondering if this might be something he;s had for a while??

re his stools, there's not loads of blood just black traces... enough for vet to pick up on upon taking his temp (which was fine).

I'm going to give him until midnight, see if he has another nosebleed, and call her back....

I wish I could help you more, but not being a vet or an expert in anything - I can't

The only thing I can think of with slightly similar symptoms is his pancreas, but I am sure your vet would have thought of that too.

Really am keeping all fingers crossed for him - let us know what happens in the morning please.

ETA: Just another thought (and not sure how old he is) did he come as a puppy with a huge worm burden?

He came to us at 9 weeks (I seem to recall) , having had his first jab, I remember taking him for the other... and I'd been told he'd been done with panacur days before we had him. His jab was a week/ fortnight later and vet recommended I get him wormed again, which i did. I use my local feedstore to get wormers for the dogs and cats and buy them in advance, so am never late with it... I use drontal tablets.

he's 9 months old now. he rarely goes off the lead as I don't trust his recall. BUT he's a total scavenger and eats things he passes in the street, he'll have jumped, grabbed it and swallowed it whole before I've even seen it, so very possible he could have eaten something unsavoury.

OH said he was lethargic in the park this morning, refusing to walk and hiding under the slide, but at the time we'd laughed and put it down to the fact it was raining (he;s a total wuss when it comes to rain and cold), though now we know he really wasnt very well...

Worm burden wouldn't cause his throat to be inflamed.
From what you are describing a wild shot in the dark would say he has eaten something he shouldn't have which has caused damage to the throat on the way down.
If he has swallowed blood, this could be what you are seeing in his stools...partially digested blood.
I would be demanding an xray to see if he is harbouring anything he shouldnt be in his tummy. Still doesnt explain the nosebleeds though.
Low platelets would worry me also if bleeding continues.
Personally, if he was mine, he would have been staying at the vets, at my insistance!

Charlie, please take him to another vet. No way would I want mine home with symptoms like that. I very much suspect from the symptoms you describe that he has eaten something poisonous.

Thankyou so much for your advice everyone.
Vet said not to bring him back unless the bleeding wouldnt sop, because he's such an anxious dog... we spent hours sat with him last night.
Sought second opinion from other vet's at 1.30am, and he came out and said pretty much the same, as he was drinking he had no immediate concerns, but that we were to take him in this morning for a check up.
So off to see our usual vet today (who's on call).

Pup has improved (in my eyes). he slept with us for the whole three hours we all slept.. and this morning decided he was quite hungry. Bleeding has stopped now and his breathing settled. he's up and walking (tenativley). just waiting for the clinic to open at 10 now....

I'm a bit suprised that the vets didnt do more last night, aside from blood tests? I don't know, because I've never had an animal poorly like this before, but I was fully expecting them to keep him in, but I trust their opinion, afterall, they're the experts... so felt a bit daft sitting here wondering if I should get a second opinion. Glad I posted here now, and glad I got the other vet out, if only to calm my worries.

Glad he is a little brighter this morning. However even though he is hungry I wouldn't feed him, if something has upset his stomach it needs to rest, and if its a blockage food will not help. I would demand the vet does a bit more today. You have had other problems with him recently haven't you, it may all be linked, if you haven't already I would tell vet about these too. Hope you get some answers today, fingers crossed for the little chap.

nooo, haven't fed him. Saw a different vet today who is pretty sure he's eaten something he shouldnt have. Bloods fine, and platelets good.
He's walking and alert, just not himself still. We've been sent back home under strict orders of rest (again) and as much water as he will drink, and to take him back should he show ANY signs of pain, or change for the worse. We've got to go back first thing for an xray to see if they can see any obstruction. Vet can't feel anything, and pup's showing no signs of pain whatsoever (even when poked and prodded), and we're wondering if he swallowed something (bit of teddy for example or something random he's found). He still hasnt been for a number two since yesterday but vet said he hopes that he may have 'been' by tomorrow, and passed whatever it is. He said, if he has swallowed something that may explain the blood (he may have gagged, tried to be sick and not succeeded), and the shaking etc.
We're literally a few hundred yards from this vets, and i asked if they thought he should stay in today/ tonight and he said he'd do better at home (less stress, he IS a stressy pup) but if we have ANY problems then there's someone on site 24/7.

His castration has been cancelled, again....

Hmmmm, do you think this is some sort of cunning plan on his part?

Only joking, hope you don't mind me lightening the mood, pleased to hear there is someone so close to hand and that it sounds as if he is over the worst.

well, OH has been counting down the days for the last month and saying "awww mate, you've only got x days left, you poor lad...I know, she's a cruel cruel woman..."
mad.gif

I've made it clear he'll be rebooked in as soon as he's better

Don't mind the lightening of mood... OH's just told the dog "please mate, go for a poo, I'll buy you a BIG bone AND let you have a ride in my new car..."

still no number two. Wee looks normal (he's drinking alot), and he's bouncing round like normal again, but the lack of poo and tenderness that's in his belly is concerning me. Just nipped into vets on way back from school to say what time I'd bring him in and had a look at account.
God I wish I'd kept his insurance going
crazy.gif

Anyway, so back down today to see if we can get to the bottom (excuse the pun) of this...

Are you 100% sure that this dog hasn't been attacked? Bruising, blood in the stools, tenderness in the belly.......

That was my first thought -
