I'm thinking of asking for one for my birthday - Are they seriously worth it, or is there anything cheaper but that does exactly the same job as them?

Any experiences good/bad, advice, or other recommendations welcome.

We brought a cheaper Shires rip off, but it would take double the length of time to dry a horse and would be saturated with moisture!

Then got a thrematex - best purchase ever. If I had to have just one rug, it would be one of these. I now have several and they're great. Ultimately well worth the little bit extra if you can afford it!

I have a Colin Cook and a Thermatex, I think the Colin Cook Thermalux is just as good to be honest, in fact I prefer it because the fastenings are better in my opinion, and it was only £60 !

I rate my Mark Todd above Thermatex, and I cannot believe I would ever say that!

Where did you get yours from?

Ive got a Mark Todd Coolex and love it. I got mine cheap off ebay. I could have done with the next size up as it comes up short.
Its half the price of the thermatex and has surcingles so safer when left on.

If you fancy a bit of queuing Thermatex has a massive sale every year at its factory usually everything is half price or less. Think its usually in November. You can tell those who have been a influx goes on ebay.

Ahh, that is interesting - do you know where it is?

IMHO Thermatexes really really are worth it. Fantastic rugs. We use the leg wraps a lot in winter too. They sell them quite cheaply at Your Horse Live - but didn't know about the factory sale. Think they are based in Wales...

I have a thermatex and think its ok. I dont think its absolutely amazing though....! I also find its a bit warm sometimes. I got mine 2nd hand for £50 though so Im not complaining, but I wouldnt fork out for a brand new one at full price!

I have a Thermatex, I got one with X surcingles. I HATE the front straps with a passion (and the belly strap on the cheaper rugs), but it makes up for it by being lovely and warm for those milder autumn/winter days, and by drying my horse off really quickly. However my share horse has a Mark Todd Coolex, and it is far better (cheaper, proper rug straps, dries him off just as well as a Thermatex, just as warm and just as smart). So go for the Coolex!

yep, there are cheaper ones that do the same job, but don't tend to fit as well. don't get a thermatex if your horse is a rug-destroyer, cos they do rip if teeth get hold of them, too.
those masta cooler rugs do about the same (wicking rug) but aren't as warm, obviously.

That's really interesting about the thermatex sale. I love my rug & now I'm after the exercise sheet with the removable fluorescent waterproof cover. Will rem to look on e bay in a couple of months.

Interesting thead this, because I've just won a thermatex in the Naf MAgic competition...........(janette has a big grin on her face

) I would never have bought one because of the price.

I do have a set of thermatex leg wraps though and they are fab.

I have thermatex but prefer my Equenox Baltic double skinned and wicks away the dampness and looks good too I find the thermatex comes up very large so go for a size smaller!!

I'm looking for a cooler/travel/light stable rug (needs X surcingles straps)- what would you guys recommend for this? I've my eye on a Masta Coolmasta XD. Any advice/comments welcome!

The MT Coolex! I do not agree that they come up small or that they do not fit well - this is my mare in hers, in her regular rug size, 6ft6...

If you don't like the front clips you can opt for parachute clips like the pony rugs have and you can have cross surcingles as an extra. I have a T2000, cordura covered thermatex (comes with parachute clips and cross curcingles

) and leg wraps and I wouldn't be without them.

Does anyone else have horses who find the Thermatex;s itchy? Both Mac and Atty loath them and scratch like anything when they're wearing them.

No, never had that with any of our horses.
