Are you a horse snob?

My pet peeve is seeing people overhorsed (in terms of ability). Seen it a lot around here - they would rather pose on a TB who scares the living daylights out of them than admit they're crap riders and ride something more suited to their ability. Sad because they usually screw up a decent horse in the process.

I'm a pony/cob fan and rode a 14hh when I got back into riding. Rode out with people on stonking great horses and did everying they did - just got very muddy whenever we cantered as I always brought up the rear! I now have a connemara x and according to the post above about fashionable breeds I am now the coolest of the cool - if you follow your passion and do what you love you'll eventually come into fashion!

The most pathetic thing I ever heard was a kid telling me that a group of friends had leased a riding school pony to go to Pony Club Camp. When the little princesses with their own ponies found out these kids were on riding school ponies they were shunned. These kids spent all their free time as riding school helpers at an excellent schol and probably ended up better horsewomen in the long run.

No.
I love looking at people who own well bred, immaculate horses, and I think good for them.
Then I come home to my pretty normal IDX and think - good for me.

I dont really care what anyone else has or doesnt have, unless its a front unload horsebox - then i care!!lol

Not really...just like cobs and have a particular hankering towards Welshies! I do like a well bred horse that is attractive to the eye though...there has to be something about them, whether that be visual presence or character.

I left the question open as I wanted to see what people said, if they did! Also because I had to go out and work a baby.......long-reined round the track.

See, does that make me a snob because I have an exercise track? Or a snob because I mention I have one?

[/ QUOTE ]

I didn't take any notice until you asked this question. You have an exercise treack and you were using it, so why not mention it?

I am sure only a jealous person would be bothered.

[ QUOTE ]
Or, would you look down on me because my long reins are made of purple and yellow yacht rope and not proper lunge reins?

[/ QUOTE ]

Hmmmm, good idea!! I want a longer lunge line I will go to a sailing shop next week!!

[ QUOTE ]
Is snobbery in the horse world tempered by good sense and consideration for the horses you deal with, and pride in yourself, your horse and your achievements?

[/ QUOTE ]

Not sure I would call that snobby.

[ QUOTE ]
Or, are we just as bad as the rest of the world and do somethings because it makes us look better than those around us?

[/ QUOTE ]

I think human nature makes us this way. Else we would never survive. I think as a rule owning horses and/or riding horses is always a challenge to strive for better. Whether it be having better horse care knowledge and/or better riding skills.

Perhaps the snobbishness comes in when you look down your nose at someone with less knowledge or skill than yourself but are not prepared to share.

[ QUOTE ]
Are there things that you see and think "No way would I be seen dead wearing/riding/using/doing that!" ? (Bring back coloured nylon string girths and matching reins?)

[/ QUOTE ]

Hmm, I guess I would look a little daft wearing matching Lilac everything as that is generally seen on children and ponies and my big bay gelding would look a bit wierd in that attire.

I guess there are things I wouldn't wear or put on my horse but I would say that is more to do with my taste. Be it good or awful

[ QUOTE ]
Does it matter to you what people think of the breed/type you ride?

[/ QUOTE ]

Gawd no. I couldn't give a damn. I am comfortable that my horse suits me. I couldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks

[ QUOTE ]
Do you care what people think of your clothes/appearance? Do you make the effort to be one better?

[/ QUOTE ]

I tend to be borderline scruffy. I do sometimes try and put on nice clothes, do my hair and make up but in the whole scheme of things I can think of far more important things to attend to. I am always clean, my clothes are always cleaned daily.

[ QUOTE ]
Did you buy something because it was the trend, regardless of whether it turned out to be excellent or completely useless for the purpose?

[/ QUOTE ]

Probably lots of times. I am learning with age to not get sucked in by the latest fads. The plus side to being that way inclined is you tend to always be evolving, looking for better ways to do things. So it isn't all bad to be someone who likes to try out something new on the market.

[ QUOTE ]
Do you sometimes not mention what you do/do not have on HHO because you worry what people might think of you?

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't mention lots of things. Not because of what people think as such just it is my private business.

I am sure I must be snobbish about something. I think it is just generally idiots that I look down my nose at. Idiots that won't listen and can't seem to work with logic.

I am very fussy there are not many horses I like - I am not fussy about type but they have to be good quality for their type. I hate bad conformation in a horse and cannot understand people breeding from crap and breeding more crap.

Baaaa!!

Totally agree!

It took me a looong time to buy Be because I admit I am incredibly picky

It's not about breed, I appreciate all types of horses, but it's got to be good for its type

I dont think Im a snob, When I was looking at horses I was looking first and foremost for temperment, espec after having a loopy mare prior!

It just happened that I ended up with nice WB's, but I was never a WB 'fan'.

I am however critical of bad conformation, and there is NO excuse for breeding a crap mare with a crap stallion, there are enough poor quality animals out there as it is, and unwanted ones, but I dont think this makes me a snob.
