Are you rugging up in this dreadful weather?

As title!

I've seen quite a few horses at the yard rugged up, not because it's cold but because of all this rain we're having! They are worried about rain scald?!

Mine are out naked

I rug mine up in light weights if it is raining and fly sheets if it is not so they are never naked. He gets attacked by the flies and i don’t want him loosing weight so he has his light weight on in then rain.

Cato is intoday with a fleece on to dry her off as she was shivering this morning. Shes been out most of the week with a turnout rug on.

Mine has a rug on today (canvas) just because it's blustery and wet. But if your horses are comfortable in this weather, then just leave them out naked lol

Ours is prob out naked! He will only have a rug on if it's blowing a gale and wet and he is looking cold! he will be quite happy to stay in his barn in the rain though.

I have one with and one without - Toby lives in at night and is turned out in the day in a fly rugs cos he hates the flies - but a day like today, he has his lightweight turnout on.

Manni on the other hand is as tough as old boots and doesn't mind whatever the weather throws at him. If I went to the field and found him cold then he would, of course, come in or have a rug on, but every time I go there he seems fine.

My eventers are out in lightweights but only because they do not have proper shelter in their fields. The project is out naked

Mine is rugged and is every time it rains. She's 27, thin skinned TB in a field on top of a hill with no shelter.

If she was younger or less wimpish, I probably wouldn't. But she's old so I pamper her a bit more

Hi!
smile.gif

I went up this morning & popped a rain sheet (without a neck cover) on but not cos he gets cold, mainly just so he's dry to ride later if I want to!
He's usually naked but thought this week if I don't take preventative measures he'll be too wet & muddy to tack up & will end up having lots of time off work, hence the rain sheet!
He might be a bit warm but until I get paid & get the sun shower sheet I was after he'll have to live with it!
My little old lady has a sheet on too - she didn't appreciate it at 6:30am this morning but I bet she appreciates it now!

Ours are all out naked. They've got lots of natural shelter in their field. It's chucking it down at the moment though and if it keeps on I might bring them into the yard for a night to give them a break.

It's the Bucas one - I think rideaway sell them - they're supposed to be waterproof but also help keep them cool while the weather is muggy & close! I've heard good reports about them! I think they're about £60 but if they do what they say then I think they're worth the money!

No out 24/7 naked...he has more than enough weight to keep him warm and a field stable to use that he never goes in...preferring to stand in the middle of the field getting wet! When I check on him he is head down eating.

Out naked, she's *used to it* so it doesn't bother her at all and it's only bloody rain in July!..it isn't going to kill horses.

I'm sure if I brought her in, rugged her and dried her off with heated towels like she's a precious delicate flower whenever it rained she'd soon turn into a wuss wanting to come in etc rather than graze happily regardless of the weather like she'll be doing now

.

No he's out naked and up to weight, to be honest if it was a case of continual rain and cold temperatures then yes I'd have his light weight on but he's a tuff cookie and has a different type of coat to the TB's that are on the livery yard, plus he's not been groomed daily so its not like I'm stripping the oils out of his coat, there is a wee bit of shelter but he's too busy stuffing his face to be sheltering under the trees shivering his tackle off, so that's a sure sign that tells me he's fine.

Lightweight no fill rain sheet today as said above - it makes tacking up easier if horse is dry !
Also we have no shelter down the fields and the fens are v blustery and wet today....

Oh I feel really mean now! Mine are both out nude. Its horrible here but mild so its a difficult decision and I just chucked them out. Might have to check on them now...

I'm sure they'll be fine. Mine is in a lightweight, but to be honest its more to make me feel better as everyone else has put rugs on (and to keep him clean as he is half hippo!)

nope, no rugs... luckily my horses aren't made out of sugar so don't melt in rain.

they have got thick hedges all around and field shelters if they want to use them though

No rugs on my lad, as said on the other thread, he's 75% ID and chubby enough to ward a little rain off.

Again, i couldn't care less what others do with theirs, there is no right or wrong answer, only owners doing right by their particular horse.

Ive got 2 in Lightweights as there looking very trim atm & then ive got another out naked. He's a IDxTB with enough weight on him to make another small pony. Needless to say he's out with a grazing muzzle.

I think they will be coming in soon though, the 2 wimps never like being out in the rain for long.
