Are yours in rugs yet ??

Last two nights just started putting a waffle cooler on, but YO huffs and puffs when we start rugging

My lad is 27, he's stabled at night - I try and leave rugs off for as long as poss but its been nippy the last few nights and just feel he needs a little something to stop him getting too chilly. Need to look after the old man !!

He's still out naked during the day unless raining when he just has a light weight on.

Am I being over protective??
 
definately not! And why shoudl the YO get huffy about it?! Mine is still out overnight, but has hardly had a rug off this year. He now has a summer sheet under a light/middle weight NZ with hood overnight, and summer sheet during the day - plus I am avoiding clipping him because he hates it!
 
My TB is still out 24/7 so has either his Amigo rain sheet or his Rambo Duo(100g) on most of the time. He does feel the cold though!
 
Mine are still out at night but the soft 2 have rugs on now. (the other 2 are welsh sec a & c and nevr have rugs on)

Your doing right for you old dude! Wether he has rugs on or not is nothing to do with YO, you pay your livery fees!
 
we are right on top of a hill so its always freezing at my yard! so mine has a rainsheet on during the day but not if its muggy, And a 100g stable rug at night because it drops to about 7 degrees!
 
My girl is still out and has been rugged all year. Re the YO being huffy, does it state in your contract that you pay money for changing rugs? My contract specifically states that rug changing is extra, I think my YO would take a rug off for a few morning but if she had to do it for the rest of the winter she'd start charging. 2 horse's on the yard get rugs changed, the rest all live in there dual purpose NZ, not really approprate for this time of year though

mine has been having her fleece on overnight for weeks, but she really feels the cold (TB) and I have just upgraded her to her lightweight stable rug and she nearly always has her LW turnout on during the day
 
My older (mostly TB) living out 24/7 looks like an obese yeti at the moment, he will have a clip on the weekend and still not get given a rug.

My anorexic 4yo however has been in a lightweight turnout for most nights through the summer and some daytimes too, he is still in this but will probs move up to a medium weight overnight soon
 
Donkey is rugged up to the eyeballs in an attempt to keep her coat from fluffing up by next Thursday when we have our last show of the season - then it is all coming off!
 
Since it has stopped raining in this neck of the woods I have managed to leave mine out 24/7 for a while, however they are in lightweight turnouts and when they were in at night during all that rain they had summer sheets on.With regards to your horse, you know whats best for him and you should do what you want!
 
mine were rugged until two weeks ago in an effort to keep their summer coats for a show. Now I won't rug at all until temp gets to around freezing, coldest its been so far is 6 oC, or its chucking it down with rain and strong winds. They have nice thick coats already and are still living out. The few days have been lovely down here!!

It's all covered in livery fees - but it's more the YO doesn't 'like' rugs, and tries to keep them off for as long as poss (I have a feeling that it's more cos it causes more work than enything!!

She changes them but just huffs and puffs and makes me feel like I'm being silly and 'over rugging' !! Then I start to doubt myself - but then it went down to 7 degrees the other night and the old boy was still naked and I felt like a reeally bad mean mummy ALL night !!!

One of mine has been running with the stallion and is out 24/7 well and truly roughed off, so hopefully she won't need a rug for quite a while yet.

The other is out at night and in by day at present, and I recently swapped her fly rug for a lightweight turnout (no fill) at night. I then had to put a neck on it as she immediately started rubbing her mane out.

I would rather not over-rug this early, as it does limit your options when winter really sets in.
 
My TB has a light weight on and have only just started putting a neck cover on aswell, he is out 24/7.
He will start coming in at the beginning of next month and will be stabled in a lw/mw stable rug straight away. But after a few weeks I may end up clipping him and then putting another rug on aswell.
 
Axel has had his lightweight turnout rug on overnight for a couple of weeks now, when it was really awful he had a m/w on with a neck cover!
He is quite a warm horse tho, and I take his rug off during the day or else he sweats up under it.
 
Mine are naked at the mo except the one in hard work. They won't freeze!

As for putting fleeces on overnight - if your horse has a coat then this is actually a bit pointless as the fleece stops it doing its job (horse's hair stands up & 'fluffs out' for warmth - if it cannot do this because the fleece is on then the coat is ineffective)
 
Nope, have TB x Friesian and little dartmoor lass, both have been out and without and are fine. Although am off on Holiday abroad next week so I may start to this weekend so that I'm not worrying while I'm away
 
Um they have rainsheets (with no fill) on 24/7, Blue will have a medium (250fill) no neck on after i've clipped him bald on Saturday!

Spider has grown no coat so has a summersheet on at night. First time it went on was last friday night.
Q is very fluffy, so is naked.

Both are naked during the day unless it's pouring with rain & then they have a rainsheet on.
